How are you all helping your students with Nonsense Word Fluency?? tia...
Practice decoding BIG words. Each syllable is a nonsense word. For example: sep-tem-ber, se-lec-ted, kin-der-gar-ten, etc... If they can 'get' a nonsense word the more challenging words will be a snap!
When i introduced new word families, I would let students generate their own words. Even if a word wasn't a real word, we would sound it out and then move it to a different list of nonsense words. That way, they had exposure to nonsense words. My high group, I would sometimes give them word sorts that included nonsense words as a category. Also, we used the Zoophonics motions (not the whole program) and that really seemed to help students sound out words, nonsense, or not.
