The principal called me tonight to tell me that I did a great job and my lesson was excellent, but that they had to go with someone else. She did say that she would give my name to the other administrators in the district.

She sounded oddly dejected and unlike her tone in the interviews, which was weird.

I didn't probe about the whys, I just said thanks and tried to be as gracious as possible. Maybe I should have pressed her.

I did get called for an interview in another district on Friday. So at least there's that.

I agree. Someone probably had connections and they had to go with them.

I'm so sorry :( been in this boat way to often lately... it's really hard to stay positive! What state are you in if you don't mind me asking? I've found that many states are so political when it comes to hiring teachers its just wrong

There's a position that I want in one of the schools I work at due to a retiring teacher, but I know there's someone else who is going to take over due to connections. And I've been working there all year. Know how you feel :(

Thanks everyone. I'm wondering if it's the money thing again. I have experience, which means I cost more, and last year I applied to this same district and didn't get an interview. A friend who works there is friends with one of the admins. and told me that the super had said no hires beyond step one.

Who knows. Just have to move on. It just felt so right, though!!!!

Most schools I interview at tell me I will not receive any steps.

Would you have taken the job if you had to start at the bottom?

I would consider it but in most districts around here, it's all done by union contract, so there is no negotiating a lower salary.

I live in a rural area where few teaching jobs open up. It is getting common for experienced teachers to be hired at beginning teacher pay and if you have a master's, not likely to be hired.

Best of luck and don't give up!

I'm looking in Michigan- the birthplace of unions.

I wouldn't ever say I would work for a lower salary, but if they told me I could have the job, but I'd have to start at the bottom, I would. I was just wondering if you would do the same.

Like I said, I'm finding it to be the norm this year that all new hires start at the bottom regardless of experience. Sometimes the job posting says it, sometimes they tell me prior to the interview, and even one told me IN the interview.

I know of one district nearby that is doing that, and it's written into the contract, I think, that new hires start on a lower step. So yes, something I'd def. do if I really wanted to work there.

Sigh. I am feeling discouraged. It doesn't help that my dad just went into the hospital last night with kidney failure. It puts things into perspective--again I am reminded that all that really matters is our loved ones and our own health-- I just feel overwhelmed right now. I'd like to get some good news soon!

I'm so sorry to hear about your dad! I hope you get really good news on both fronts in the very near future.

Yes, it sounds as if they maybe had to take a transfer or something. At least she is passing on your info and I'm glad you have another interview on the horizon! :hugs:
