I see that word spelled incorrectly on here almost more often then it is spelled correctly. Do you think it is because we have seen it spelled wrong so often, that many begin to believe that is how it's written?
It definitely is a pet peeve of mine.:eek:hmy::p

It's one of mine, too, kinder. But roots to the rescue! It comes from the same root as the word definition (which also, via French, gives us finish.)

That word is spelled wrong everywhere! In fact, and I hate to admit this, I used to spell it wrong until I was in my senior year of college...and I'm a freak about correct spelling!

I think I would still spell it wrong unless I think through it... definite + ly.

I have to say de-finite-ly to spell it correctly.

Same root, and that route works infinitely well, too.

I'm not trying to criticize anyone on here, just pointing it out. I've been noticing it a lot lately. And you are right Cassie, I see this mistake everywhere.

I'm sure I spell it worng....I spell a lot wrong....I can't spell and I know it and I admitt that I don't usually use spell check on here. I teach how to spell phonetically so I sound out a lot of words to spell and I pronounce it with an "a" instead of an "i".

I usually spell it wrong, but that red line pops up under it each time I try to spell it wrong on this site. On the other hand, I never realized how much I used that word until I started coming on here and misspelling it all of the time.

I'm an English teacher and I'm terrible at spelling. Yikes! I know...what a confession. I definately spell definately wrong on many occasions. I think that the key is being able to admit you're wrong. My students correct me on occasion and I always thank them and correct it. They have told me the appreciate it because many teachers get upset when they are corrected. I can only hope to make less mistakes each day. :)

Too funny. I just went to correct it by editing the title and decided to read it first. Good thing. I get crazy about spelling errors. I hope nobody is offended when I correct the titles on here.

It is a word I have to think about every single time I write it. I connect it to "finite" to help me remember.

    "alot" drives me nuts too!

I have always been a super speller, but as I get older I am noticing difficulty with my spelling. Plus my keyboard sticks all the time!!! That doesn't help.

I can not spell. I think it is because I learned to read with **** and Jane so I don't think phoenically (I am sure I just spelled that wrong too). Having made my confession as a horrible speller, it bugs me to no end to see the word "alot" - it is two words!!! A LOT That bugs me a heck of a lot more than misspelled words. :2cents:

I agree, a lot written as "alot" drives me nuts! Also principle used when they really mean principal!! A teacher should NEVER make that mistake!

I think some people are just more inclined to be spellers than others. There is no shame in being a poor speller! You just have to get a great spell checker, like a Franklin electronic - portable!- or have a friend who will proof read all of your writing.

What drives me crazy are the cutesy bulletin board things and worksheets for kids that misspell or use words incorrectly, such as "Bee a great reader!" w/bumble bees, etc. I think it is mean to present kids with misspelled words when they are just learning.

I ALWAYS spell it wrong, so I've gone to using def. in my e-mails. It sounds a bit 80's, but at least I haven't misspelled it! (my spell check just told I misspelled 'misspelled'. sigh.)

Yeah, I have to do the de-finite-ly thing, too.

My peeve is the there-their-they're thing. Not because I never make those mistakes, but because I always have to be so careful the check that I didn't. I know the difference. I know how to use them properly. But when I get into a typing flow ... well, their are words here and they're that I might mix up, and there words I should know by now. ;) Yes, that was intentional.

Also, one of my journalism professors taught us one way to avoid the its-it's confusion. Don't use contractions, he said. If you always write "it is," (or at least think out the non-contracted version) you'll never make that mistake.

Eight years out of college, and it still feels funny not to use an apostrophe in sentences where "it" is possessive.

Oh, I also hate those cutesy words. There is a teacher in my district that calls her spelling tests SPELLebration, a combination of spelling & celebration! Now come on, a spelling test and you are spelling it that way. It is written right on the top of the spelling test paper. You are trying to teach the kids correct spelling and you use that! Doesn't make sense to me.

I get extremely annoyed when teachers spell things wrong on documents typed in Word. The program underlines the words!

I understand that people make mistakes, I mean I spelled eighteen, eight-teen for the better part of my youth, but teachers should not in school. I mean on the board, understandable. But it never looks good when typed things are spelled incorrectly.

The worst was when I saw a student's math worksheet:

"SolvEing Complex ExpressionEs with Similiar Radicals"

(Oh, and my personal favorite, "Seven Principals of Honors Math."

I'm typically a good speller, but definitely is one of those words I can never figure out. I'm guilty of spelling it all sorts of different ways. Of course, on any work paper I would use the spellchecker!

Um, are you talking about me? I am aware of my problem with this word. :whistle:In fact, I posted something a while back about "what word do you always spell wrong". I said that mine was definitely. A few people also agreed that they spelled it wrong too. I find that many people confuse loose and lose.

I also think people just type fast and don't spell check. I see hear for here and here for hear, but I know people know the difference.

OH OH OH OH that one drives me NUTS. A principal is your PAL. I see principle all the time. I even caught it on someone's cover reference sheet! AHhhhhh hello you won't get a job spelling principle for principal.

Now as most of you know I'm the world's worst speller! I blame it on not learning to read fluently with comprehension until 5th grade. I was so busy learning to read that I missed all the writing lessons.

I don't think it's the site it self. I started getting the red line when I switched to a different computer. My mom's computer doesn't give me the red line and I get so annoyed.

BTW I typed red as read both times haha.

Incorrect spelling affects me in the same way as off-pitch notes affect me. I can't help it.

lemon, I never saw that post/thread. I really don't know who does it, I just notice the word and not the person who wrote it. As I said before, I am not criticizing anyone on here, it was just a general observation.:hugs: I know I make my share of mistakes, but when I see the same one repeated over and over and over again, I just thought it should be pointed out.

Lose and loose......I didn't even mention that one. UGH!!!:eek:hmy::p
