Today is my first day back, but I know I already have two that are really going to need help with following directions.

What has made the days so bad. Maybe we can offer some help?

Oh no! I feel you. I have three kiddos that are definitely going to be challenging behavior wise.

What kind of things are happening? Maybe we can help or offer suggestions.

I'm really struggling also. Trying to keep a happy face on at work, but I'm having trouble keeping it up when I get home.

Re-entry is always difficult. It will get better.

Its not so much the classroom itself, but the organization of schedules and dismissal that gives my type a personality a panic attack.
I am scheduled for a whopping 17 minutes of music a week, after lunch mind you, and i think thats a waste.
Im scheduled for pe first period so thats my conference period, but I can't do anything because every 5 minutes I have to walk a late straggler over to the gym.
Dismissal is a hot mess that I can't even describe.
No bells or p.a. system in the school.
There's another thread that says the grass aint always greener... and I concur. Just sad my old school was a 3 hour daily drive. Loved the school, couldnt take the traffic.

I think it just takes time to adjust. I'm also in a new district and I find myself missing my old coworkers and old school often. However, I don't miss the commute I had. The school environments are so different (tons of meetings weekly during my preps at new school and barely any meetings ever at my old). The school day is also longer than I'm used to and we aren't allowed to take our Kinders out for any recess breaks- they only get the 10 minute recess after lunch and they are in school from 7:30-3:00. It's a long day for them. I have 2 sped students who are extremely high maintenance (one is a runner and has run out of my room several times this week already). We are on day 17 and its getting better but it will be a long year.

Can you talk to your principal or with a group of teachers and share what you did at your old school? You might come to find out that there are teachers who don't like the procedures at the school and your P might be looking for some new ideas to try out. :)

Did you say only one 10 minute recess for 5 to 6 year olds in a 7 1/2 hour day. That is unbelievable! It is not developmentally appropriate or best practice. Many middle schools are even moving back to giving recess time during the school day. I cannot imagine how a kinder student would go a whole day without some type of unstructured play time. I feel for you and those students. That is a rough day!

With all the studies of the benefits of recess especially with younger kids I'm amazed there are still schools limiting it! What's the argument?

I think most schools will argue that they get p.e., which will count as a "recess".

That's so sad. I remember when I was in elementary school, all the K-2 classes had two recesses per day. One in the morning & one after lunch.
It was a big deal going to 3rd grade because you only got 1 recess and you were allowed to use the rock climbing wall in the gym during PE. And your classrooms were on the other side of the school with the 4th & 5th grade classes.
I have a great memory (ha!)

Yes, that's what I said it's a 'loss of instructional time" to take another recess break when you factor in the 2 minute walk to and from, plus the recess minutes. I rolled my eyes hard when I was told that. But, there isn't much I can do about it. I give as many brain breaks in class as I can but it is still a very long day!

our specials are on a 3 week cycle so they get PE everyday for a whole week then they don't get it again for another 2 weeks. It would be different if they were at least getting it 1-2x every week.

I don't agree with it, I'm just guessing that's what admins would say.
Mine have pe first period and I choose not to go outside for recess right now (too hot and muddy) , so it's a long day. We do a 15 min gonoodle video for indoor recess though. But i had 2 people walk in my room and just stare, so idk if its frowned upon at this school. Heaven knows they'd never actually tell me.
