This really will vary by school and your set periods (specials, lunch, etc). In my district we block 2 hours for literacy (some teachers have 2.5 hours) and 1 hour for math. Anything left over is for science and social studies (usually alternating days or units).
I have never been allowed to set my own schedule. It is always handed to me with no input from any of my grade-level teachers. Here is ours as it has been for the past 4 years - I have no idea what it will look like this year, because we are getting a new principal. 7:50-8:30 Students arrive (technically, they are tardy at 8:10), Announcements, Morning Work 8:30-10:30 Reading/ELA (mandatory 120 minutes or more) 10:30-11:00 Monday - Library, other days, continued ELA 11:00-12:00 Math 12:07-12:27 Lunch 12:30-1:15 Enrichment (specials) 1:15-1:30 Recess (unless it is too hot, too cold, raining, the custodians are cutting the grass, someone (custodian) forgets to unlock the playground....) 1:30-2:30 Supposed to be science, social studies, & health, but this is also where all of our interventions take place 2:30-2:45 Pack up 2:45-3:00 students leave (by bus #, car riders are all called out, walkers leave at 3:00) Personally, I think it's ridiculous that 6-7 year olds are expected to go 4 hours without a break! (Yes, we do small group rotations and have a bathroom in our classroom, but I think they need more than that!)
Talk about micro-managing. Monday's Schedule 8:00 student are picked up from the schools lunchroom or the auditorium by the classroom teacher. 8:10 to 10: 10 LIteracy BLock ( 120 uninterrupted minutes ) Intervention usually happens at this time with outer classroom personnel push ins. 10:10 to 10:20 Snack 10:20 to 11:10 Math workshop 11:15 to 12 :00 Computer CLuster 12:05 to 12:55 Lunch Recess usually happens during the lunch break. The lunch aides are responsible for the children. 1:00 to 1:45 writers workshop 1:50 to 2:25 social studies or science 2:25 to 2:35 pack up and first dismissal. The lower third of the class will remain for more intervention during the extended day. The mandatory intervention is Mon., Tue, and WEd. 3:10 final dismissal. The schedule chances daily because it depend on when the perpetration period is given.
Your district or state willl have allocated minutes for each subject area. Check into that before you make your schedule. I changed my schedule completely 2/3 into the year last year and it was such an improvement. Find out if you have that flexibility as well.
Thanks Meeting with my team this week. We will discuss. I like to do writing in the a.m. (ELA block) which is 120 min. Then lunch, recess, specials...Math block in the afternoon (90 min). Then SS & Science towards end of day.
So jealous of all you early starters!! Our schedule is changing a ton, as specials got flip flopped from the pm to the am. we aren't especially excited about this idea, as we feel like first graders are strongest in the morning. But, what can you do? Here is my tentative schedule... 9:10-9:20 students in, unpack, morning routine 9:20-10:20 math 10:30-10:50 science/ss 10:50-11:40 specials 11:45-12:30 lunch/recess 12:30-3:30 language arts block, probably a recess in there too 3:35 dismiss
I'm starting a new school so I have no idea what the schedule will be like, but I believe I can decide when I do teach my subjects. I've always done the first two class periods for reading/LA, then 90 minutes for math, and the rest of the time for Bible and science and specials. I am really anxious to see what the schedule will be like at my new school.
Ours will probably change again this year, but I won't know until next month when the P tells us. Here is last year's schedule... 8:45-8:55am Morning line-up 8:55-9:15am Morning routine, lunch count, message, math minute 9:15-10:15am Math 10:15-11:15am Reading 11:15-11:45am STAR period (skill reinforcement- math and LA) 11:50-12:30pm Lunch and recess 12:35-1:35pm Writing 1:35-2:20pm Science/SS 2:20-2:35pm Math classroom routines and snack 2:35-2:45pm Pack up 2:45-3:30pm Special 3:30-3:40pm Chairs up, dismissal
