Here is a quote for each day of the new year. I plan to update my board each day using this, so just thought I would share if anyone else would like to use it.

I also plan to post an obscure holiday that each day is, for which I have a tear-away desktop calendar that was a birthday gift; and a pun of the day, for which I have not yet found a packaged daily list online.

Please, for the puns you can find many sites. No need to have them in any order. Students often like to share puns with you, and if clean, you can let them. Puns are the highlight of my day!

A good phone site for puns is 1 888 424 2424. Press 2 for the pun of the day.
Today's pun: What is a cow's favorite holiday? Moo Years Day!

Why do people say "no pun intended" , as if always apologizing for making a pun? I think they're fun and usually clever.

"So how should we reward teachers? We shouldn’t. They’re not pets. Rather, teachers should be paid well, freed from misguided mandates, treated with respect, and provided with the support they need to help their students become increasingly proficient and enthusiastic learners."

So you would post that quote on your board as an inspirational quote for your STUDENTS?

This is a wonderful way to summarize how teaching should work. Wish it happened more often than it does. Teachers just want their students to become successful, happy to learn. That's the goal, even if not always the reality.

If you have the time, look in the free resource thread, more puns towards the end - I didn't always post them, figuring that most teacher had a stash of them. That said, I really love puns and wordplay. I think it is good for students to be exposed to them fairly early.

That is an awesome idea! I used to do an inspirational quote of the week, but I got lazy about 5 yrs ago. ( Maybe more like overworked in some areas.) You just gave me the inspiration to get back on it. The ones I had were good for figurative language and character building. My mom used to have corkboards ( many yrs ago) with quotes and sayings that I still remember and think of to this day! :) Most of them make me smile and remember her.
Puns would be great for kids a bit older than mine. Most of mine, don't get them. :)

If "getting them" becomes an achievement that gets them their moment in the spotlight, they may be working on it in the back of their brain, even if you don't think they "get" them. I used them in a high school bio class and some got them straight away. Everyone would say that they got the day's pun, and we would move on. Out of nowhere, sometimes much later (90 minute class) would come "OH! Now I get it." That always cracked us all up. Seldom the same person, but that Ah-ha moment was always so pure, and they all got such a kick out of it, even those who had clearly understood from the beginning. For the younger kids:

I could go on - it is one of my favorite searches - but maybe this will give something for others to work with. My search was puns for younger students, I think. Even some of these will make me laugh out loud.

Thank you, Vickilyn for all of the great sites. I just now looked through the one on puns.
I saw 1 on jokes too that looks good. I am focusing on figurative language soon and will use them.
Some of my kids get a kick out of this:
Let's eat Grandma. Let's eat, Grandma. Some get it. Others laugh when you read it to them at least! :)
