Well, it looks as though the end is near. In spite of some recent optimism, Dad is beginning to show some declines in spite of all of the aggressive treatments. His heart is just not working effectively enough and they have done all that they can. Speaking with the doctor today, he is not optimistic that Dad's heart will be able to maintain him once he does not have the support of the ventilator anymore. I am going to Ottawa tomorrow, some of Dad's brothers and sisters are coming as well. At this point, if Dad continues to decline, he may be removed from the ventilator once the family arrives and we are ready for that. No time frame, but the doctor feels that the end will likely come within 24-36 hours after he doesn't have the extra oxygen. Please pray for us as we make this difficult decision and as we struggle through the next week.

I'm sorry to hear this Mrs.C. You will have your family with you and that is a good thing. I know how hard it is for you right now. I will say a little prayer for you and will think of you often. I told my dad in a similar situation that it was time for him to let go and time for him to rest. It will be a time of peace for him so I hope that brings comfort to you and your family.

Thanks all for your prayers. Dad passed away late Sunday afternoon. My sister, Mom and I were all there, and my 16-year old son had spent some private time with his Papa earlier in the day. We're doing okay...things have been quite quiet; family begins to arrive today for the funeral on Thursday. Please continue to pray for strength for my Mom, who lost her mother and her husband in the past 2 weeks.

Thanks so much everyone for your kind words, thoughts and prayers. It has been a "brutal" couple of weeks, but it is good to be back home now. We are doing okay, and are warmed by the outpouring of love that others have expressed for Dad and the memories we shared with each other and with family we haven't seen for far too long. I worry about my Mom in the short-term (as she is now alone in the house), but know that in the long-term she'll be fine due to her strong faith and tremendous support system.

When my dad passed away, my mom said our phone calls helped her while she was adjustung to living alone. It's a matter time and it seems to get better. I feel your pain...I wish you all peace.

MrsC, how is your mom holding up? I think the hardest time is when the services are over, and everyone has gone home, and things should get back to normal, but ...they don't. I hope she does not live too far away from you and family. My mom lived alone for about 6 years after my dad died, and although she lived right down the street from me, it was still hard for her. She did not want to give up her house, or move in with anyone, but it was lonely in that big old house. I worried alot about her too. I am thinking of you all and your family. Even when you know your loved ones are in a better place, it still hurts to miss them.

    moombeamsinajar:
Thanks so much for your concern. Mom is 4 and a half hours away--too far to make it easy. My sister and I were with her for almost a week after Dad died, but she has been alone since last Saturday. My sister is going back on Sunday so that she can go into the bank with Mom on Monday to take care of things there. Mom has a tremendous support system through her church and choir. They have presented her with a list of who to call in almost every situation imaginable (car, outside work, furnace, etc). While I do worry about her in the short-term, in the long-term I know that she'll be okay.

I know that she wishes we could be there more, but, realistically with a demanding job and two very busy teenagers, I am needed here. We are keeping in close touch through email and phone calls, and she knows that I'll be there when I can for the things that need to be handled in person.

Continue to pray for us; I know that there will be more difficult times ahead.

At least she has the support system in place through her church. I am sure that will help.
