Step 1 (BA + 30) for most districts in Central California ranges from about $35K to 40K. That sounds high, but as someone said earlier, cost of living here is high, although not as bad as Southern or Coastal California. Also, the higher starting salaries max out sooner... I left a federal position to pursue this dream, and I'm taking about a 35% salary cut. But of course, I'll have summers "off" so I plan to supplement by teaching summer school/tutoring, etc. for the rest of my working career!! :-D
In Okaloosa County, Florida (panhandle...aka the hurricane magnet) the starting pay for 0 years experience and a BA or BS is 29,098. 2nd year: 29,971 3rd year: 30,870 4th year:31,796...and so on
Darshan, I do not know if there is a state mandated beginning salary for teachers with a BA. I know around where you are and in San Bernardino county the range is about 27,000-43,000. Some have benefits paid and others you have to pay for you own benefits. For Colton Joint Unified School district my starting is just over 42,000 and they pay for benefits. Jennifer
Canadian Teachers Hi Luvmykids: I know you were looking at around the US to see how much teaches get paid so I thought you might like to compare to your teaching counterparts here in Canada. I live in Alberta, which is in Western Canada (right above Montana). Here the pay scale goes according to how many years of education you have combined with years of experience. I have just finished my third year of teaching with five years of education ( B.A in psychology and B. Ed in Elementary Education) and earned about 46, 627 Canadian which is about 38 620 American. Each year we get a pay raise until your eleventh year of teaching.
SRH: I did the same as you. Leaving the federal government for teaching. My pay cut will be around 50%. I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area and there's a wide range of starting salaries. I've seen between $36-48,000.
Cherry Hill also has like 18 schools. I live in CH and went to school here. Theres 2 high schools, 3 middle schools, an early childhood center, and like 12 elementary schools. No wonder the budget is always so high...just salaries alone! (but I vote to pass it)
I work in Hillsborough County Florida (Tampa Area) next year the starting salary with a 4 year degree will be 32,100. It goes up about 500 a year.
In New South Wales (Australia) a beginning teacher starts on $46 234 and can work up to $66 348. This sounds great until you remember that almost $2 of our dollars make up $1 US. I'd like to be on Australian pay paid with American dollars though!!!!!
Darshan, I know that Redlands East Valley starts out just like a starting salary in the Redlands district. Redlands district is very hard to get into and is not hiring right now. I would look into Colton which is the highest and seems to be always hiring, Fontana, Riverside, San Bernardino, Rialto, Jurupa, and any others that I can't think of right now I would look at www.edjoin.org to see if these districts are hiring for highschool. Question for carolinesmom18 I am thinking of going back to school to become a kindergarten or elementary school teacher and I live in Pittsburgh. I wanted to know what you like and disslike about it. How much time you have to spend after school hours working on lesson plans and grading papers etc. What you expect your salary increases to be. Also do you have any idea how much less a starting teacher with a certificate or masters might make at a private or Catholic School such as Falk, Ellis or the Walford School? I am really tired of my current career which involves being in an office all day which I hate. I have been thinking about teaching for about three years now. Also, how hard is it to get a teach job in Pittsburgh? I hear it's pretty tough. Especially for elementary education. I would really appreciate any advice you could give me. Thanks.
Palm Beach County in Florida....$33494 Bach degree and 0 years experience...it went up this coming school year, but I'm not sure how much it is.
In the houston area it varies between 35-37000. My friends school district (deer park) starts at like 38000
Michigan I teach in Michigan in one of the 28 school districts in upscale Oakland County. My district is one of the lower paying districts. New teachers with a bachelor's degree earn between 35,000 - 40,000. I, personally, have been teaching for nearly 30 years and hold 2 masters degrees. My salary last year was about 75,000.
For those that are interested, here's AFT most recent salary survey. They used to do one every year but the most recent I could find was 2001. On pages 53 and 54 they list the BA minimums and MA maximums for the 100 largest cities in the US. On page 61, they make adjustments for cost-of-living. http://www.aft.org/salary/2001/download/salarysurvey01.pdf
In my county in Maryland, I'm going to get $39,438 for certified, 0 experience. The big thing is to look at it in relation to cost of living. NJ/NY gets more, but it cost more to live there. For my area, a basic 2 bedroom apartment in a decent area is $1,000 MINIMUM. So the salary is nice, but its still not enough. Houses here cost MINIMUM $200,000 for a BUMMY house.
Which county are you in? I taught in Maryland many, many years ago. It is where I started my teaching career and beginning pay in my county was nowhere near to that. :wow:
That explains it. I was in Talbot. I think it was the lowest in the state or at least very near the bottom.
I live in Maryland, but teach in DC and starting salary here for teachers with a BA and no experience is 40K.
In Cobb County, Ga (suburban county north of Atlanta) 0,1,2 BA: 35,233 MA: 39,955 In Fulton County, Ga (suburban and urban county north and in Atlanta) 0,1,2 BA: 37,584 MA: 41,724 In Atlanta Public Schools (urban---inner city school system---) BA: 40,157 MA: 44,173 ....with yearly increases in salary...but tough system to work in.
In New York City, With a BA you get 39,000. If you have extra credits and an an area of specialization you can get more.
Last year's contract, Broward County, Florida: (Ft. Lauderdale area) Starting salary-$34,300 (Step 1) Step 22- $63,554 For an in-field Masters add-$3000 per annum For an out of field Masters add-$2,100 per annum Specialist and Doctorate degrees are more. Now, you can also earn a Basic Incentive stipend if you complete staff development for a certain number of points- add $ 1,200 p/a out of field and $1,700 in-field. And, after 10 years of service if you complete staff development for a certain number of points beyond what you did for the basic incentive, you can add $2,400 p/a for in-field. Believe me, there is a lot more, but that is the basic.
I teach in a small town near Oklahoma City. I am a first year teacher and am going to start out at 30,300.
Looks like the salaries here are the highest except for San Fran. This is great for us and those in San Fran, but the median house here is over $500,000 (a 2b/1b condo conversion I looked at last week was $450k). This subject should not be too personal for anyone, because salary schedules are public information that can be found on any district's website. My wife's district (they just negotiated a 4% increase today that is not reflected in the schedule - woot! $1900 extra): This district I Student taught at (and hoping to be hired at too - they also have a 4.6% increase not reflected in the schedule):
I live in a Sacramento susburb and salaries here vary greatly, depending on your district. The lowest I've seen is 28,000 and the highest is $39,000. This is with only a bachelor's and no credential. With a credential it jumps up about $5000. By the way, the median housing cost in my city is $460,000!!!!! And they're just regular houses, not mansions!
I will be starting at apx. $34,000 with a masters and no expereince in a rural district outside of Albany, NY.
I thought the mandate in CA was 34,000 but I could be wrong. If you are "Emergency Credentialed" or an intern they can pay you a lot less. In the LA area the lowest I've seen is about 36,000 & highest 44,000 for starts. But, buying a house? Think again. Cracker boxes with rotting plumbing & no yard are going between $750-to 2mil. It costs more to buy most condos then it does a house right now. Rents for 3 bdrm houses are between 2,000 & 3,500, 1 bdrm apatment avg is $1,300 & it is costal & inland, good, bad & medium areas. Also, most districts make you pay part of medical. The city I live in starting teacher is 42,000, but for medical for a family of 4 is about $600 a month & that's only partial for dental.
WOW!! I can;t believe the cost of homes there. We have a 2200 sq. ft house and we paid about 60000 for it. We wouldn't be able to live in california.
NYC teacher salaries Hi! I'm a NYC public school teacher. Starting salary, BA/BS degree, no prior experience is $39,500. Getting your MS puts you at about $43,000. We're hoping for a new contract SOON, so hopefully the salaries will get better!!
You probably wouldnt be able to live in suburban NY either...the average 3 bedroom home goes easily for over $400,000, with over $6,000 a year in taxes. Most people carry 2-3K mortgages. My husband and I feel like we're banging our heads against a wall trying to look for a reasonable home to buy.
In 2003-2004 the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) conducted an Illinois Teacher Salary Study. According to the study, a Bachelor's degree with no experience earns you a minimum of $10,000 while a Master's degree with no experience will earn you a minimum of $11,000. In 2003-2004 beginning salary for a Bachelor's degree holder started at $20,890 with the highest amount toppling $42,600. This is quite an increase considering that the statewide beginning salary in 1998-1999 was $16,485 with a high of $38,097. Anyhow, the site also gives some other interesting stats regarding salary and, as I said, it's statewide.
Except that that's just a base... depending where you are, a beginning teacher with no exp. can earn FAR more than that.
