Welcome, plfayer. What are you seeing on side 2 of your score report? There's a chart of performance indicators that can be informative.

    I've passed English CSET 4!

Yes! I received the email today. Pass.

Last time, I had all check marks (!) but I failed. My score was 207. I guess the CSET folks didn't like the points I chose to make, even though the points were correct. CSET 4 is tricky. There's just about everything under the sun to potentially write about. I feel that the questions should be more confined. Anyhow, it is what it is. Obviously, it's possible to pass.

I spoke with Dr. Frances Sussna the night before the CSET for apr. 30 minutes. We mainly talked about news media. She used to work for a newspaper, so she knew her stuff. Because I spoke with her, one of the questions was a breeze. I didn't have to think too much. Two terms she used came in handy for me. If you'd like some insight, call her @ (650) 283-7955. Don't wait 'til the last minute, though. She gets flooded.

    12Souza,

Many unofficial results were emailed today. If you didn't request emailed results or don't have access to your email, go to CSET's site. You can log in once to view results. I doubt that anyone who falls under today's release date has gotten results in the mail yet. By the way, the CSET site says that some exams take beyond the noted release dates to score. This might be the case with you.

    Hope this helps! :)

I got my unofficial result for Subtest IV yesterday and sadly I missed passing by 13 points. :( I passed the first three subtests on my first try but was worried about Subtest IV since my peers who had taken it before me did not pass, and I unfortunately met the same fate. I've already registered for the next test and am trying not to stress about it, but it's hard for me now that I only have 1-2 more chances left to pass before applying for my grad school program.
I'm waiting on the official results to be mailed so I can hopefully get more insight as to what I need to work on for next time. From reading this thread I already know that I made the mistake of writing too much, and I also think I should review more technical terms so I can use them in my responses. When I get the official results I'll try posting again and hopefully I can get some feedback--everything I've read so far has been very useful. Thank you!

    Thank you TeacherGroupie!

So I got the mailed results and on the back I got check marks for all sections except for needing more support for the Media response. I received a ++ overall for my responses, which is a little discouraging since I felt I was on point for the most part in my writing. :/ Oh well... perseverance.

anyone taking this one on saturday?

i passed 1-3 on my first time, and this will be my second attempt at test 4. i reviewed the content standards this time, which i now realize would have helped me a lot if i had done that before the first attempt. oh well. it still is a hard one to study as it blankets several different areas, and the prep books don't help much with this one.

2 plus marks. I guess my answers just weren't strong enough...
I pretty much tried to bs them since the first two questions were on communication issues which I was completely unfamiliar with...since looking at the standards I now realize that these would have easily been answerable had I reviewed the standards before the test. Live and learn.

Two plus marks and what, please?

The art of passing tests like these does in fact involve bs - but it's principled bs, based on a grounding in the fundamental principles and terminology of the sub-domain in question plus determination to play nice rather than jacking people around via their emotions and fears. If you're good at writing argumentative vs. factual essays, try looking in both the speech communication and journalism/media domains for terminology that reflects equivalent concerns about how we argue and support properly and how we tell when someone else is bs-ing egregiously.

Best of luck on Saturday, dilly013. I'll be thinking of you.

    Test IV of CSET English

I failed to pass test IV of the CSET English. :dizzy:

I see I need to do something more to get a better score. I got 193 out of 220. I don't have the official scores yet. I see I'm in good company; I was more worried about the other parts than this section.

I used XAM CSET English 105, 106 and 107 to prepare as well as quick reading and noting taking session of An Introduction to: The Art of Theatre by Cassady. I also have The Ten Commandments of Theater: The Gospel According to Stanislavski which I'm going to read carefully. I guess I need a primer on speech/oral communication as well.

What say other posters on this board? :2cents:

    CSET English subtest IV

I have become frustrated with my attempts at passing this little test and, apparently, am in good company. Thought about paying the money to have my latest try re-scored, but I would not get the results back soon enough.

I just want to pass and receive my SS English Credential and continue teaching at the high school level.

I found the posts on this topic to be helpful. Specifically, I think that perhaps I am writing essays as opposed to short answers.

Can anyone tell me the difference?

    Thank you very much.

Essays have introductions and conclusions, and it's hard to write one in under 200 words. A short answer either begins with its conclusion and justifies it or builds to its conclusion, and 200 words is plenty provided one has answered the question.

    CSET English subtest IV

Does anyone know how to find an online tutor to help me pass this test? I have exhausted all known study guides. I know the content and understand the rubric. I may not be the sharpest knife in the kitchen, but I'm not the dullest either by any stretch.

    Hello Cameraman,
I feel your frustration-I have finally ended my CSET nightmare.
Subtest I and II were not difficult for me, but Subtest III and IV were. After two failed scores on III, I drove 2.5 hours to an excellent tutor. I passed right after. I had failed Subtest IV once before, so drove 2.5 hours again and passed this last time. Her name is Karen McDermott-she is awesome! She is in the LA area (I'm in San Diego). You can google her name online - I highly recommend her and her study guides are the best. I found that with subtest IV you need to focus on simply answering what is being asked. By using Karen's study guide and one day prep class I had no trouble passing.

Hope this helps and let me know if I can help. Good Luck :)

    Thank you adsanchez

I have already found a tutor that I think will be helpful. However, if I do not hear back from her by tomorrow, I might give Karen a ring.

    Again, thank you very much.

For those of you who have already taken the test, is there any possibility to give me an idea of what authors, dates, facts, etc. I should be studying? Truly, I want to know where to focus my energy. There is too much information and it is not concise enough for me to figure out what is truly important to study. I do not have time to waist. I am in the San Diego area and if anyone wants to form an online study group or even meet up, I would love to do that. Send me a message! I need to take this test in July and would appreciate any help to pass. I purchased the OCDE notes and am willing to share with you if you share your notes.
    Best,

    Ana

Anakris, you're not going to get more answers on A to Z through posting in more places. You're just going to make yourself have to run around from thread to thread.

In any case, it's hard to answer a question like that, because the CSET English subtests exist in multiple editions, and the emphases can and do vary from edition to edition. (Frankly, any preparation course that claims to prepare you exhaustively for ALL and ONLY what you will see on the test is fibbing. I for one don't teach that way.)

Which subtests are you taking in July, and what are your biggest worries?

Yup: I'm not that easy to get rid of.

Sam, you should have your printed score report by now. On side 2 is a chart of performance indicators. What do you see there? (If you'd rather discuss this privately, let me know and I'll send you a private message.)

    Subtest IV retake this Saturday...

I will be retaking subtest IV which I didn't pass back in 2008. I have since passed Social Science and have become credentialed, and recently passed English subtests II and III earlier this year (I passed subtest I in 2008).

So subtest IV is all that remains.

When I took it in 2008, I met or exceeded the minimum requirements for Speech, Media, and Creative Writing, but fell short for Dramatic Performance. The diagnostic code was "s" for support.

I remembering reading through this thread a month back when I first decided to take it again. I bookmarked it and decided to ask you fine people for some advice.

Because it has been so long since I last took it, I am afraid I won't be able to meet or exceed the requirements in the areas I already passed two years ago. So what would be a nice quick and dirty study technique/materials that you all would recommend?

Thanks for your time and consideration here.

Doubt yourself a little less, please: if you knew it then, you can get it back now. Make sure you know the vocab - the glossaries on the thread "Elmer's English resources" in this forum may be very helpful. You could also look up lesson plans for these areas.

I personally think this test is a rip off! They will never convince me that all of these individuals with experience in the subject are failing! Just another way for California to get money out of under paid teachers. And they wonder why there's a teacher shortage?

    Part 4

Don't know if you've passed but I also feel that somethings not right within this testing system. How can all of these smart people continue to fail and have to pay again? Something should be done about this scam that's going on!:

I take it you haven't passed, bananas1964. What in CSET English IV seems to be giving you grief?

Subject-matter tests are a federal requirement, by the way.

    Hi all,
I have passed 3 of the 4 subsets....I am taking subset IV for the 3rd time this Saturday and I feel more than defeated from this. My undergrad is in English from Uof H and I have been in my Masters program at USC for the past year with all A's and one B. I am a private writing tutor. I cannot begin to tell you how frustrating it has been getting the subset IV back and not to have passed....again. Afterall, I quit my 2 part time jobs to do my student teaching but was yanked out of the classroom until my dear love subset IV is passed. On subset IV, I have a score of 207 out of 220 and apparently I lack in the Speech/Media departments....

Are there any words of wisdom? a book to look at? a website? I only have a couple of days until the test but if I dont pass, I am going to consider it meant to be that I graduate without my credential....
Do you absolutely fill in all the space the answer allows? Is it true to have a title for a short answer question?

I appreciate your help and advice/concern!

    Best,
    Samantha

No title required. Don't fill in the space unless you write big. But you do need to show off with technical terms.

What do you see in the breakdown of your results on side 2 of the score report?

    Hi everyone,

I just took subtest iv today (first time) and as soon as I got home I realized I'd accidentally cited the wrong example for a certain type of speech.

If I did well on the other 3 short answer topics, is this mistake enough to make me fail the entire test?

Thanks in advance! Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Rain Gal, Sounds like you would get a score of 2 if that was the only thing you did wrong for that topic question so you should pass. Im not sure about my answer for the same question.

I think you both will have done fine.

A reminder to the community: please don't post actual specific test questions on A to Z. See the WARNING at the top of this Web page. I'd hate to see anyone's test score invalidated.
