I have to create a week ( or two ) long unit teaching about empathy to preschoolers. I'e got lots of ideas for activities but I'm just not sure how to break it up across the week or what to teach each day ( ex. Mon: everyone has feelings; Tues: sometimes other people's feelings are different from ours etc) Any suggestions would be amazing!!! I' excited about some of the games we can do butbi just can' figure out how to map out the week.

    This book,
Borba, Michele. UnSelfie:Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World. N.Y.: Touchstone, 2016; e-book: ISBN 978-1-5011-1010-8
contains excellent lists of activities for teaching empathy.

I recall my teacher college professor in 1979 stating that empathy is too mature for preschoolers to experience, and I thought, I don't agree with that. Now science has agreed with my pre-service judgment. Preschoolers do experience empathy.

When I was 4, and I still remember this clearly, I was lying on my back on the porch glider wondering what would happen if I pushed my feet against the living room window. I kept pushing harder and harder. Suddenly, crash--the window broke. A day or so later, after the repair man had replaced the window, my mom gently reminded me of how the repairman had cut his finger while replacing the glass, teaching me that my actions can effect others. That one little lesson has stuck with me throughout my entire life!
