Hi everyone- I think my cover letter needs some critiquing. Please take a few minutes and let me know what to change. Thank you in advance. ALSO, I haven't posted before and I tried to make certain things bold or italicized...if it didn't work...you may see or on this post which indicates where I made the attempt.

    Dear Mr. ABC:

Please accept this letter and the accompanying resume as an application for a teaching position in the ABC School District. As indicated by my resume, I am certified to teach both Elementary Education and Literacy in New York State. I am thoroughly familiar with the high education standards of this district and am seeking the opportunity to join your dedicated and professional teaching staff.

I have spent the past two years as a Reading Teacher in various school districts. My experiences have shaped me into a flexible teacher dedicated to meeting the needs of each individual student. In my most recent experience, I had the joy of seeing a kindergarten student transform from non reader to an avid reader reading on a D guided reading level. I was able to achieve such success with her through a reading program I tailored specifically to her needs. I worked with her using Fundations, reading and writing workshop, and the Words Their Way program.

In previous experiences, I utilized the Fundations program with nineteen non reading first grade students. In addition, I taught guided reading and allowed students to track their progress in comprehension, accuracy, and fluency using graphs.

I strongly believe one of the most important elements in being a teacher is to instill a lifelong love for reading. It is important to provide students with a classroom that promotes and immerses them in literacy and fosters the development of reading strategies necessary to achieve academic success. With that in mind, I recognize the fact that every student learns differently. Therefore, it is imperative to accommodate all learning styles in order to meet the individual needs of the students.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon to schedule an interview appointment.

    Sincerely,

    MY NAME

    Enclosure

LI is a brutal place for jobs, now more than ever. I think you can do a better job of reallly selling yourself as someone who gets results.

And you will, of course, send it to EVERY ONE of the 124 districts, right??? And the Diocese of Rockville Centre? And Friends Academy and every Lutheran, Jewish and any other school you can find???

Are you applying for a classroom position or Reading Specialist? I'd beef up the second paragraph with a few more details and drop the third (or condense it to oe sentence if that info is not on your resume).

I LOVE Words Their Way, btw. I took classes with some of the people who wrote it when I was in grad school in VA. Unfortunately, no one around in AL has heard of developmental spelling!
