If you have glasses, how much did you have to pay? I had to get glasses today for night driving. I've never had glasses before, so I had no idea what to expect in terms of cost. But I have two insurances, so I didn't really think I would have to pay much. Well, my total ended up being $156, which seems really high to me. I don't know if I just picked really expensive frames, or if they all cost that much. I didn't look at any of the prices until I had picked mine ($195)-so now I really wish I had looked. I don't know if I should cancel them and go try to pick out some that are cheaper. But I'm really indecisive, and I did like the glasses a lot. At the same time, I would only be wearing them at night when I'm driving! I'm just thinking about it too much now (I overthink everything) so if you have any suggestions, please let me know!
Far From Home, the cost of your glasses depends largely on your prescription. I have some friends that have very strong prescriptions, and their glasses can cost as much as $1500. I think $156 is a very reasonable price -- even glasses with very weak lenses tend to ballpark around $200 because of the frames.
If I were you, and I did this myself, I looked into getting them online. I went to a website and I got glasses with my prescription in them, and with shipping got them for around 50.00. I Loved them and they were great (my dog got to them and chewed them). I think it was here? http://www.eyeglassdirect.com/ or you can do a basic search. I would highly recommend doing it online because I too in the past have bought eyeglasses through walmart, and even there it cost me @ 200.00.
I have a ridiculously strong prescription myself (7.75 in my contacts, 8.25 in my glasses), and my glasses cost me about $400 plus frames. Creating high quality optics is simply an expensive process. That's also why high-quality telescopes and astronomy-grade binoculars cost so much. MathManTim
I generally expect to pay about $300 when I buy new glasses (presrip and frame), but I always make sure I wait for the $99 sale at Sears. I use to work there so then I got another 10% off. My insurance never covered any optical procedures except the basic exam. We just discovered that my husbands company offers optical insurance - I got my glasses for $35 I was shocked!! There were price restrictions on frames, but they were easy to accomodate.
Recently I paid a whole $45 for frames,lenses and shipping... I really like my new glasses. (I DO NOT have insurance right now) Before that, I paid nearly $300 for a pair that i loved that had the magnetic sunglasses on them. I had them three years before i lost my sunglasses.
Thanks everyone! The lady who helped me said that sometimes they cost around $400-but my mom had said hers were only $75, so I was wondering why mine were double the price. I should have a pretty low prescription because I've never had a problem seeing anything until I started having to drive home from class 45 minutes when it was dark. I do have a tiny bit of nearsightedness and an astigmatism. I think I'll keep what I have. (I still wish I had looked at the prices of the other glasses though!) With it being the first time I've had glasses-I don't think I'd be able to pick some online without trying them on first. I did look online a lot last night, and they seemed a lot cheaper! I might have to try that next time. Now I'm just hoping they're not ready til my next payday, because I have to pay the balance! I have a strict budget and didn't have an extra $150 this month!
My last pair cost $450... 10 years ago. I desperately need a new pair (I only wear them at night and 1st thing in the morning till I put in my contacts). But I get the whole enchilada - lense reduction, anti-glare, fade to sun glasses (in case I have to wear them during the day). I'm not really looking forward to buying a new pair without insurance.

I have a pair of Via Spiga presciptions glasses for $200. My mom has some Versace prescription ones for $500 or $600. She normally doesn't pay that much for common items, but I guess when it comes to glasses, she does!
I paid about 350 for one pair and about 400 for the other. I have 2 pairs so I can "mix things up." This may seem like a lot of money, but 1) I have severe astigmatism and I can't wear contacts (my super sweet doctor literally tried about 50 types of contacts before I told him I didn't want contacts anymore :lol) and 2) my prescription has stayed stable for the last 6 years so unless I damage them I can keep them a very long time. edited to add: I bought mine at lens crafters and used a coupon promotion, so I saved about 100 on lenses. Also, I buy the top-notch lenses and add anti glare

It was about 200 for frames and lenses after my insurance covered part of it. At the time I thought it seemed a little high w/ my insurance, but now it seems about average.
I went to America's Best...Two pairs for 69.95. You have to be very firm with them though....I also have a very strong prescription and they tried to charge me almost $300. However, I told them I just wanted the basic lenses (nothing fancy, not thinned out despite the thick lense) and they were then only 69.95. I don't wear them often, so the heavier lense does not bother me. Though, you seriously have to be firm. They'll try to be sneaky and you could end up paying a lot. I went to 3 different branches until I finally got what I wanted and needed.
I just got glasses. My frames were $115. I have progressive line bifocals. Because my prescription is thick and I have astigmatism, I have polycarbonite lenses and anti-reflective coating. My total was $416. If I'd gotten the basic frames, no bifocals, and plastic lenses I could have gotten two pair for $99. I tried going cheap once, and I absolutely HATED the look of those glasses.
If you go online to buy them I would advise you to be careful. I did that and well I thought I was getting a deal- $10 glasses, but insane prescription means insane prices. So I paid $120 because my eyes are that bad (the quality of the glasses and the style was soooo much better then anything I could get at the drs for that price), but when I got them I was not sure they were the right prescription, I was wicked dizzy for the first two hours. so I have to bring them to my eye dr and ask him to check them for me because I do not want to ruin my eyes to save money. Overall I would just say to make sure you have someone available and willing to check your prescription and make sure it is right. It has been such a busy week I have not had time yet, so I am still wearing my old frames. I buy my contacts online and I am very happy with that.
