I was offered to be the math coordinator at my school. I do not hold a masters degree or an instruction 2 cert. How would you feel if a math/ELA coordinator was less qualified than you? How would you feel if this person was showing you how to teach math? I just feel weird because I have less experience than others for the job. BTW, no one else wants the job.

If no one else wants the job, then I wouldn't worry about it.

I wouldn't worry about. I'm more qualifed than half the people in my building and have more experience than alot and am doing a job that person without a bachelor's degree could do.

I don't know the qualifications of most of the people I work with unless they say something. I judge them by how well they perform their job. Should work the same way with you. Good luck and congratulations!

Take the job and enjoy it, it doesn't matter what others think.

Go for it!! This is a great opportunity. It's not so much about the degrees but about how you perform your work.

Our coordinator were all teachers who showed a certain interest and success in the subjects they are coordinating for now-none of them have any kind of advanced degrees. To me, our math coordinator is more of a liaison-relaying changes in curriculum/assessments, monitoring math instruction, giving us ideas. I've never once thought about her qualifications.

Thank you all! All of you have VERY valid points. :) I guess I get too nervous! I think I may take it.

Would this be on top of your teaching job?

How do YOU feel about the job? Do you feel up to it? Do you feel that you're capable of doing it justice, in spite of the degrees you hold or the experience you have?

Don't sweat the opinions of others. If you think you'll do a good job, then take it.

Our coordinators were all once regular classroom teachers at our school. I don't know one way or another what their degrees are in or how many credits they have. What I do know is that they were selected to be coordinators because of their interest in helping other teachers be better teachers and because of their demonstrated competency in the classroom. Our coordinators receive lots and lots of training, both initially when they first take the job as well as throughout the year. I trust them to know what they are doing and to advise based on knowledge, experience, and training. It wouldn't bother me a bit to learn that one of them had fewer credits than I do.

    Hope this helps! :)

I got the job! I feel really good about it. I will have a mentor. I'm a classroom teacher until they find someone to take on my class. I have 21 students now. I just got 6 new transfers. I've had people encourage me a lot for the past few days. I guess I felt intimidated about the fact that I will be teaching the middle years teachers who only teach math. My principal told me it doesn't matter what the content is, it is more about how you convey it to the children. I've taught 4th/5th grade math, not middle school math.

Congrats! When I was dept chair, I was in the middle of the seniority list for my dept. I had about 6 people above me and 6 below me. But I felt like I WAS the best person for the job as long as I was humble and understood that everyone in the department had something to teach me. But I think I was the best person to facilitate the department. Others would get too argumentative and blow up, or would be too afraid to share a differing opinion at a meeting, or wouldn't be able to keep the department together and on task in meetings. In a role like that, your knowledge and experience are not always the most important things.

Congrats! Right after I left my last district, that position opened and I probably would have gotten it. So jealous!
