What are some fun "cooking" projects you have done with your first graders that support and go along with something you are teaching in class?

We were doing a unit on farm animals and made our own butter. We collected a bunch of baby food jars and each group of 3 filled a jar with heavy cream and a pinch of salt, and dropped in one clean marble. They put on the lids and took turns shaking the jars for about 15 minutes until the cream firmed up into butter. The kids spread the butter on crackers.

We have also made cookies after reading The Doorbell Rang. There are dozens of great learning opportunities that come out of making cookies!

My class did gardening last year. We then made beet juice from the beets we grew. We also made salad twice from the stuff we grew.
