This is my second year subbing. I live in a suburban area with not much hiring. In the past two years I have applied to every opening within an hour to an hour and a half drive from home, only got two interviews so far. Never considered moving because I have young siblings. My family relies on me and I couldn't bear the thought of leaving my siblings, even just for a year. But I am totally fed up with subbing. Just tired of the depressed "I want my own classroom feeling". Been considering moving out of state. I live in PA. Wouldn't like to move too far just yet.... Was considering NY, OH, WV, possibly MD. Somewhere within a couple hours drive of the Pittsburgh area. Can anyone recommend any good schools/places hiring/cities in OH/WV? I'd say those are my top two... definitely the closest. I know moving to FL or states like that would get me a job... but I'm not desperate enough to go that far just yet!
I live in Northeast Ohio and there's not much to choose from around here. I see a lot of postings for the Toledo area as well as the Columbus area. Columbus is a pretty cool city so maybe you can check that out. I've seen a few postings for the Youngstown area as well but not a ton, although it's very close to the PA border.
Columbus has more openings than most cities because it's also the largest and Ohio State produces dozens of newly minted teachers every year. It's still a tough market to break into, especially for the nicer suburban districts like Dublin and Hilliard. I also see a fair amount of postings for tiny towns in northwestern Ohio. I never applied to those because my fiancee is tied down to his job with Big Pharmaceutical Company and similar opportunities would be not available in that region and we're both hopeless city folk.
I teach in Central OH. I love living in Columbus, but I wouldn't say there are tons of job opportunities. There are more than NE OH where I graduated from, but fewer than KY. I only had one interview in the area in a two year period, but thankfully I got the job and love it!
Dgpiaffeteach, it's great that you got the job and love it. I would love to work in Columbus. Could you please tell me if the school where you are is currently saturated with licensed teachers who are working as assistants or substitutes? I'm trying to assess exactly how difficult it might be for an out-of-state teacher to find a job there.
We actually don't have many subs period in my district. Most prefer to sub in the city of Springfield. We usually only have a couple openings per year, mostly due to retirements.
Don't know about other places besides ny but I wouldn't recommend it. No jobs and city is going through major changes
I have friends who have been struggling to find teaching positions in Ohio, specifically in the south central region.
I was signed up to be a sub for central Ohio schools through ESCCO (Educational Services Center of Central Ohio) and had constant phone calls for subs. I wasn't able to sub (I was hired for a nice non-teaching job shortly before school started).
