We are starting our "community" unit in social studies. I know that this is a huge unit, but I'm trying to think of something more unique. Anyone do any fun activities?

I can't take credit for this idea because a great teacher at our school has done it for years. She and the children send out flat stanley's to people all over our community. The person then writes about what flat stanley did and sends him back with a picture of them with Flat Stanley. Then the children work to make a map of our town and they show where Flat Stanley had been.
Also, I saw on the Dr. Jean website where you could make a class book about community helpers based on the book Brown Bear, Brown Bear.
