Were you at work or off today? Everyone in my family went to work...in my dstrict, kids had a half day, rest of day was PD for staff. Some families forgot it was half day and were late picking up kids one sad little boy was in the office or an HOUR waiting for his ride. I facilitated the group PD meeting in my school.
We also had a full day in-service, but got out a bit early. Since we are on the subject of Columbus Day, I still find it strange that this is the person who we honor for a holiday. He tortured many of his own crew and helped contribute the killing and enslaving of lots of Native Americans. He spent 6 years in jail for this. With all the great people we have had live in this country, couldn't we do better?
We had a regular, full day. I think the state swapped Columbus Day for our state holiday, because we get that state holiday off later in the month.
We were off. I spent the ENTIRE day working around the house. Movers delivered the dining room set from Peter's mom. So, in addition to still more laundry from the fall clothes changeover, I washed all the china and crystal and found a home for a bazillion platters.
We had a full day too. The one perk of the day was that so many other places were closed, I cut my commute time in half this morning due to no traffic. I got to work earlier than I expected and got a lot done!
We had today off but not for Columbus Day. We are on fall break until next Monday but the kids don't come Bach until next Wednesday.
Off for Thanksgiving. This will be a strange week--I have a moderated marking session this morning, so my planning time has been moved to later in the day, tomorrow is a regular day, then I'm off Thursday for PD and Friday for appointments.
Funny Columbus Day facebook post I saw... To celebrate Columbus Day, let's all move into someone else's living room and tell them we live there now.
My friends always joke that white schools take off Columbus Day and black schools take off MLK day. We always had MLK day off Here, Columbus Day had such a push back from the community (as it should in my opinion, are we really celebrating someone who spread disease and famon and war? anyways..) that they now call it ''Day of Cultures'' where they celebrate history. Basically.
I hope those weren't your teacher friends. Both are federal holidays in the US. My school has a half day or students on both days followed by PD for teachers.
Our fall break usually includes Columbus Day, but not always. When it doesn't, we're in school. I'm off all this week.
