I have finally decided to attempt a classroom theme next year and I have decided to do Hollywood. I need some help, though. 1. I need to come up with a list of classroom jobs that fit with the theme. I want to call it "Cast List" and then I'll have the jobs listed, with the students name beside it. For example: Usher (line leader) .................................... Nichole What are some names that fit with the Hollywood theme and normal classroom jobs? 2. I wanted to call my student-of-the-week bulletin board, "Live from the Red Carpet … an interview with ___________” and then have them answer questions. What type of questions would you ask? I want them to be interesting and more than "What is your favorite ___________________?" 3. My classroom expectations are going to be called, "Quiet on the set!" and my students will earn tickets for good behavior. I'm just not sure what prize should correlate with each amount of tickets? Do you have any ideas? I will be teaching either 4th/5th grade, so the prizes have to be suitable for that age group. I know that I want one to be a No Homework coupon and another to be a pencil, but I'm at a loss with the other ones. 5 Tickets = Extra 10 Tickets = Producer 20 Tickets = Director 30 Tickets = Best Supporting Actor/Actress 40 Tickets = Best Actor/Actress 50 Tickets = Academy Award Winner 4. I will also have my Essential Rules that go along with Ron Clark's, "The Essential 55" but I have no idea what to name them to fit into the theme. Any ideas? 5. What can I call my Workshop Way board? This is where my students go if they finish an assignment early and need something else to do. I was trying to think of what actors/actresses do when they have downtime on a movie set, but didn't have much luck. I was thinking, "In my trailer ..." but didn't really like the sound of that. Thanks for all your help!
I'm not very creative this morning, but some prize ideas could be having a picnic lunch with the teacher and a friend, a free book (collect the 95 cent books from the book order and use for the 40 or 50 tickets), gift certificates from local restaurants and shops, time with the classroom pet (if you have one), game time with a friend, art center time, or breakfast provided by the teacher (instant oatmeal is cheap and nutritious!). I always find prizes to be really hard to come up with. It's the one area I'm never really sure I'm on the same page with the kids. As for the Workshop Way board.. what about the Kraft table? Isn't that where they have all the food catered? You could have the choices on platters, like the catered food. You could also do a unit comparing novels to the movies they've been turned into. I'm going to try to do that this year-there are soooo many books that are movies now. I haven't started on it, but you can watch my website for when I do-I'll post everything. Good luck! Maybe you could get movie ticket gift certificates (some gift certificates look like movie passes) or gift cards for $5 or something so it's a contributing bit to a movie for the prizes. Maybe you could even plan an end of the year class field trip to the movies depending on your school.
JOBS Some ideas for jobs trash - Cleanup Crew desk checker - Special Effects I have a daily poem reader - one person picks a poem every day for 5 days until the whole class has had a turn. This job could be the Emcee. QUESTIONS YOU COULD ASK STUDENT OF WEEK What character from any movie would you like to meet? What setting would you like to visit? Who would you like to thank? Then maybe have a series of choices, for instance: popcorn vs. nachos good guys vs. bad guys action vs. comedy Jim Carrey vs. Will Ferrell etc.
Ha ha - I work on production (well, not anymore - I just got a teaching job!), so I can help you out with any job titles, if you're still looking! Just list the jobs you'll have in your classroom and I can tell you on-set titles that fit them. You can even call people grips and gaffers and other names they might not know so that way they'd learn what these things actually meant when they watch credits! It's a fun idea though! Good luck!
Hello, I live in CA, adjacent to Hollywood and if you would like me to mail you postcards to enhance your theme, please let me know in a message to me. Daniel
Our school is also doing a Hollywood theme and I found a cool website that lets you make a movie marquee sign. I'm using it for my class packet. Also, another teacher found this website, but thought it would go great in this post, and that is a movie poster. I can't wait to try that one out with my new class. making a movie poster http://bighugelabs.com/flickr/poster.php making a movie marquee http://www.redkid.net/generator/sign.php

I started on a Hollywood theme this year, but didn't get far! Thanks for the ideas! One thing I did was decorate a hallway bulletin board with black fabric. I made red curtains that were drawn back with a yellow tab (from construction paper). This was my stage board. I hung my students work out there. My "about the student" was "In the Spotlight". I made the clapboards, and inside I had things about my spotlight student. If I think of more jobs-I will let you know-but off the top of my head: Handing out papers- Script person teacher helper- Agent

I'm also doing a Hollywood theme in my room, though mine will be very understated since I teach high school. I've made a bunch of stuff on VistaPrint and I bought some bulletin board sets. I'm looking for a director's chair as the finishing touch!
