Even though I've taught other grades prior to this year, this fall will be my first year teaching 2nd grade. I know that I need to keep classroom rules short and to the point. I tend to come up with too many rules and I know 2nd graders need things simplified. Any suggestions for classroom rules for 2nd grade? Thank you!

I teach first grade, and these are the rules I am using this year:
    1. Listen to all of your teachers.
    2. Be kind.
    3. Be patient.
    4. Do your best work and word hard.

I teach them that teachers are any adults. This also covers following directions. Be kind covers a variety of things like hitting each other, pushing, words, etc. Be patient is useful for when kids like to interrupt each other, interrupt you while you are teaching or with a reading group.

    I hope this helps :)

this is my first year to teach and i was thinking of 3 rules:
    1. respect others
    2. respect the school
    3. respect yourself

and then have them discuss what respect means and role play how to perform those rules...respect others-no name calling, pushing, talking in the hallway, cutting in line...respect the school-take care of the books in the library, dont write on desks and walls etc, put materials back in their spot, respect yourself-no talking out of turn ( you dont get to listen and learn from your peers), do you homework ( so you learn and dont repeat 2nd grade)...

does this sound okay to you veteran teachers...i havent made my rules poster yet

glad to help out :) I got these rules from a kingergarten teacher that has taught from K-3 and used the same rules in all grades. They're easy to understand, but still broad enough to cover several ideas, but not too broad.

I plan to read David Goes to School and No, David. Then, we'll discuss the rules and what they mean. Then, we'll see which of OUR rules David would have broken if he was in our class. I think then we'll make a book of David following the rules. :)

Follow directions the first time they are given.
Keep hands, feets and objects to yourself.
Raise your hand to speak or get out of your seat.
Respect and be kind to others.
    Be quiet and appropriate times.

My students and I together discuss how we should treat each other. This helps in building a classroom community. I then write out their comments on chart paper and post them in the class. All of the students sign the chart and I refer to it often during ther 1st month of school. I DO influence the discussion to include all areas of behavior/ I also have my behaviour chart that has the reasons a student would have to pull a card. These reasons always line up with our report card conduct code.
    Following directions
    Completing classwork/homework
    Respecting others
    Too much talking
    Self-control

I read the book "Love and Logic", and this year instead of posting "rules"...I am posting expectations (not only for students, but also for myself that they can expect from me!)
I have one poster that says:
    Student Expectations
As a student in this classroom you will be expected to:
*Treat yourself and others with respect
    *Make good choices
*Do your very best at all times

and then another poster that says:
    Teacher Expectations
As your teacher, you can expect me to:
    *Treat you with respect
*Work with you to solve problems
*Help you master all 2nd grade skills

I really, REALLY enjoyed "Love and Logic" and am excited to see this approach work as well for me as it has for everyone else I've talked to who uses it!

My rules are be safe, be respectful, and be responsible. We also have school wide rules, but my three rules cover any possibility so they work well together.
