    Hello fellow teachers!

I am about to start my second year of teaching. Last year I taught 4th grade all subjects and this year I'm transitioning to 6th grade language arts. I'm super excited about this! I was wondering if y'all had any recommendations for good 6th grade level books to start my classroom library. Any feedback would be awesome!

Also, if you have any insights about essential classroom items, methods or supplies for 6th grade language arts I'd love to hear them as well. Thanks!!

Have you checked any online book lists? I always find them helpful. On the other hand, will you have a budget for your library? I always had to scout out the thrift shops every weekend to stock my shelves. Every county library (maybe city libraries, also) has a reading list by grade level. You should probably keep some of the 4th grade level books that you already have. Lots of help here in setting up your library: http://www.ala.org/alsc/booklists

This has a nice list with summaries: http://www.educationworld.com/summer_reading/6th_grade.shtml

    This, too:

I suggest Maniac Magee, Freak the Mighty, The Giver.

You are very welcome. I set up libraries with over 1000 books in each for 3rd and 5th grades when I was in the classroom because our school had no library.
