I am going to be a first year teacher and I was wondering what materials and resources other teachers consider essentials in the classroom from the start.

As the teacher I like to have these available all the time. These are all supplies that any basic office should have:
    pens, pencils and Sharpie markers
stapler, 3 hole punch, single hole punch
    notepads, post it notes
binders (1 for lesson plans, 1 for sub plans, 1 for student info, 1 large one for assessments, etc.)
    File folders
    Desk trays for files
    Of course staples, paperclips, etc

Books: Teaching with Love and Logic, and Teaching With Intention

Something to think about investing in: Small personal laminator. They are at walmart. You can order the laminating sleeves through some of the teacher catologs for WAY cheaper than walmart...something like 100 sleeves for $15 School Smart brand.

Things you may need to borrow or your team/media center may have
    Paper cutter
    Die cut machine

It really depends on what grade you'll be teaching. What you need for K is a lot different from 6th.
