I apologize if this has already been discussed before. I did a search but, didn't find anything.

I was curious as to what your class sizes are.

Please list grade and then the number of students you had last year. :)

2nd grade: 30 (had 5 migrant students at various times so it fluctuated 30-35)

I had four sections last year and a LOT of turnover, but this is how they were most of the time.

    4th grade I: 23
    4th grade II: 25
    5th grade I: 24
    5th grade II: 27

I am really hoping I don't have as many kids transfer in and out next year. It was hard to keep up with class numbers, behavior charts, and other things when we were constantly being shuffled around.

3rd grade: last year had 25 (14 girls, 11 boys) am hopeful that the information they told us before school was out was correct and we won't have over 19 or 20 this year and if the last class is an indication wouldn't mind if they were all girls (my boys were EXTREMELY immature except for 3).

4th and 5th grade - Most classes were between 27 and 30. A couple had 25 due to smaller rooms and a couple had 31.

3rd grade-varied from 23-28 through the year (military base so we have a lot of kids move)

But our district will let us go up to 35 before they hire a new teacher.

I'm so jealous of all your class sizes :( My roster, so far, for next year has 31 on it, not counting any migrant students.

I WISH our district worked that way but, they take the average of 1-5 and if the AVERAGE is over 30 then we can get a new teacher

I could barely fit 28 desks in my room, so I don't know what I would do if I had 31, or up to 35 students. I would probably have to get tables!

Tell me about it! = )

My room measures approx. 35 ft. long and 30 ft. wide. It's very crowded but, according to the Fire Marshall the capacity for this room is around 45....

30-35 second graders....that is so not right, for them OR you. :hugs:

I hate to even tell you this, but our 2nd grade had 13 last year. :) That is certainly not the norm, though, as we average right around 26 per class in our K-5 elementary.

I teach 5th and had 26, of which three were IEP students working at a first grade level.

I can't believe how low some of your classes are! 18?? 20??

Next year I go back to 1st and the list before registration was at 19...I am crossing my fingers we don't get a ton more!

4th...I had 20 (12 boys, 8 girls) Our P tries to cap K-2 at 20 and 3-5 at 22. I know many of our K and 1 classes had about 17 or 18 kids in there though.

2 years ago when I was in a different county school, I had 28 in one block and 26 in my second. I <3 smaller class sizes! lol :D

The gen ed classes are capped in my state but there are no caps for special ed. Who ever comes and needs self contained comes to me if they are zoned for this school.

That is outrageous. It completely defeats the purpose of a self-contained room. The law in your state needs to be revised.

I have the most wonderful teaching assistant ever born, we have been doing this together for years so we are really organized. Because I keep the same children for several years, we build good relationships with the families so they are eager to help us. And, we love what we do for our children so that all helps make our job easier. Thank you for the compliment! However, we are both taking early retirement in two years...we can see the light at the end of the tunnel!!!

I just finished doing our class organizations (for the 4th time this week!). Our grade 1 to 3 classes cap at 20. Our split 3/4 classes are at 23, grades 4-8 are all at 30. We are almost full-I feel like hanging out a no-vacancy sign, although we could accept 2 more students each in grades 6, 7, and 8.

Alice, what does your homeroom "look like"...when do you meet, what do you do, what are your responsibilities to your homeroom? That's a lot of students!

Caps mean absolutely nothing now with the budget issues we are facing.

Not rural, but a private K-8 school in a suburb of San Francisco. We have 1 class per grade level, plus 6 specialist teachers for both Upper and Lower School.

Our classes cap at 15, but right now enrollment is down, and only a few grades are full.

I don't think there should ever be more than 20 kids in the class. Some of my best school memories are from when I only had 15/16 kids in my class. We got to do a lot more and we were all close.
