My mentor wants me to plan a short read-aloud for the first day, which is Monday. I chose the book Chrysanthemum. I know it's a picture book and all, but we agreed it's still appropriate for fifth grade.

I don't know what activity to do with them, however. She told me I should probably plan to do something relating to vocabulary or comprehension. This book has a lot of great vocabulary, but I don't know how to make it interesting. I'm terrified if "losing" my fifth graders on the first day.

    Does anyone have any ideas?
