I am a kindergarten teacher and next year I am going to start a new theme. Recipe for Success! We are going to be cooking every Friday. We will begin cooking a recipe for each letter of the alphabet...from there we will probably do cultural foods or theme related foods. I am enlisting my mom to make 20 child sized aprons for my class that they will wear while we cook. But I really need some ideas for other theme/bulletin board/behavior chart ideas that relates to this chef/cooking/recipe theme! Please help and post back any ideas you may have!! Thanks!
Really Good Stuff has a condiment class management set that I have admired for a few years: http://reallygoodstuff.com/product_details.aspx?item_guid=4c9821d1-edfc-47ff-93bb-69526a4c9dc2. Bulletin Boards: We're cooking up a batch of first graders! Also, having kids write recipes is hilarious and makes for great bulletin boards. Print some themed paper and ask them to write how to make something or you scribe what they say. I always do a Thanksgiving/turkey dinner recipe and it is a favorite every year. Behavior Chart: Keep Cool! (start as ice cream and gradually melt until you are in "hot water")
Our class actually leant about occupation. We made a lot of attributes whatsoever... including a chef's hat & apron. Probably it will be useful for you. A field trip to a bakery would be a cool idea as well.
When I taught k, we took our students to the district kitchen as a field trip. We also tied in cooking to our monthly theme: Japan - rice, Ireland - potatoes, farm - Little Red Hen - bread (bisquick biscuits), healthy me - fruit salad, Mother's day tea - scones, etc. & we always made cookies to give to our 5th graders during testing. However, nobody wanted to try Vegemite when we studied Australia!!! Behavior/incentive chart: pizza/nachos (add toppings to it), a chef - add his/her tools (they can be tools for learning too)
I teach in an International school where we learn about the Christian, Muslem, and Jewish holidays as well as any other cultural holidays of the children in our class. I bake for each and every one of them. If you would like, you can email me and I can send you some of the ideas that I do...

I don't teach little ones, but even my big kids loved making ice cream in a bag. Would have to watch their hands, but you could substitute fruit juice for those that can't have dairy. There are plenty of ways how to do it online.
The USDA site has lots of ideas. I have a curriculum from them called "Tickle you Appetite" about serving sizes that I am beginning next week.
