I like to spend the year reading a chapter book series to my class. In the past few years we have read Junie B. Jones because they love it so much!! However, I am a little bored with her! I would like some suggestions of other chapter book series that your first graders have loved to listen to. Thanks.
My kids liked Cam Jansen books. They loved trying to figure out the mystery. The Magic School Bus chapter books were really engaging but they are a little hard.
I also read Junie B., but my kids loved and even laughed harder reading, Sideway Stories from Wayside School. http://www.amazon.com/Sideways-Stories-Wayside-School-Sachar/dp/0380731487
Ivy and Bean, Horrible Harry. I just saw that they have Nancy Drew mysteries it looks like re-written for the younger kids-I think I may try those this year. I think they'll get a kick out of the fact their teacher read them when she was little!
These are all such great chapter books. They kids love them all! On a side note I was wondering what you do with a novel study with your Grade Ones? Do you do reading responses? Or just use it as a read-a-loud?
Lucy and Lucy on the Loose. I think their is third one but I don't remember the name. My kids also like the Fly Guy books. They are short chapters. I use these for the kids to read rather than for read alouds.
I've been reading The Boxcar Children to my students for the past few years. Every class I've read them to has loved them and gotten really excited about them. They also think it's fun that I read the same books when I was about their age.
I actually dont like Junie B. The grammar is incorrect and some of the things Junie says arent exactly appropriate. The kids love it though, so I let them read it for AR towards the end of the year, but I wont read it to the class. My kids are absolutely OBSESSED with Ready, Freddy books. I really like this series, but sometimes I have to "edit" it (some not nice words like butthead, loserface, etc.). Other than that, they are great!!! The kids get so into it and find it hilarious. Magic Treehouse is great too!!
Ready Freddy books are great. The main character is a boy instead of the usual girl character. The grammar is correct unlike Junie B.
My daughter's teacher read them Magic Tree House in 1st and she's hooked! She loves them, she's now going into 4th and still reading them!!
My daughter found a series called Roscoe Rilley Rules. I believe there are 7 or 8 books in the series thus far. Pretty funny. I think they ae written by Kate Applegate
I second Roscoe Riley Rules. My students begged me to buy more books when we were finished with #6. They didn't care that 7 and 8 hadn't been published yet.
