I've passed all my credential requirements for a level 2 clear SPED m/m. I was an intern for 3 years. Observed closely and with high standards. I've passed an oral exam and presented a complete portfolio on all of my proofs that I know and can integrate all of the teaching standards. I passed with an A the reading instruction course. I have my BA in English. I have taken the darn RICA 4 times. My scores are as follows: 216, 208, 218. I just took it again this last Saturday. I'm so burnt out!!!!!! What are my chances this time???

I think your chances depend on how well you prepared for the exam. How did you prepare this time that was different from the other times? Why do you think you keep failing?

I think I prepared well this time and the last time.... I did take the online practice test this time. But I'm starting to feel like it is just a lucky draw on who my exam reader is. I'm so close to passing, which irritates me so much...

Have you been seeing any consistent patterns in the diagnostic indicators on your official score reports? Are there domains on which you're regularly getting ++ or less? How are you doing on the case study?

It varies really. I had a ++ on comprehension last time. I get +++ usually on the case study. I am not a great test taker in general, but these scores are driving me mad.

Any comments on the case study?

In your constructed responses, are you using the technical terminology of reading as you would use it with fellow teachers with whom you were discussing a student?

The comments were: provide more strategies. I believe I did each time. I really feel like I'm up against the wall here. My scores are close, yes? Do I have a better chance at passing this time? When does one just walk away form all of this?

For the case study, the RICA score report lists these three areas that can be singled out for improvement:

    - Identifying the student's reading strengths and/or needs
    - Describing instructional strategies and/or activities
    - Explaining how the strategies and/or activities promote reading proficiency

Which of these have you seen on your score reports? Is there one that has shown up on all of them?

That phrase doesn't just mean "provide more strategies". The word describe is a direction to choose strategies/activities AND show the strategies or activities in action. This is also an opportunity for you to show off your technical terminology.

The graders are given a rubric upon which to score your exam, and they are looking for a variety of things. Using the right technical terminology is a big one, as is demonstrating a strong understanding of the underlying pedagogical concepts. In addition, graders are also looking for you to support your broader conceptual statements with strong supporting evidence, examples, and rationales. Are you making sure to do this?

I honestly believe I am using the above mentioned. I am a crappy test taker. I'm a special education teacher working with the ED population. The stress of this position is already difficult. Would any of you say that I am at least close to passing based on my previous scores? I think that my studying helped at least a little to boost those scores?

Scores in the range of yours are very close to passing, yes - and suggest that you're a better test-taker than your self-assessment indicates. I wouldn't counsel walking away from all this - but you might want to consider getting a little help.

JN73 what did you do to prepare yourself for the test? My story is very similar to yours and I'm just about ready to give up which is very unfortunate :( Please any help anyone could provide! I've had it with this test!

Use the practice guides, 'Ready for RICA' and the other ones. They practically overprepare you.
