tagalicod, CBEST has no questions about teaching practice, so don't worry about point 3. By no means would you be the oldest ever to take CBEST or the longest out of college, so that takes care of points 1 and 2.

Have you looked at the test descriptions, sample questions, and practice test sections on the official CBEST Web site? If you can handle what's there, you'll do fine.

You might want to consider a class or tutoring, shallynanda: I'm guessing from some things in your post that your reading and writing skills could use help.

Many people find this book helpful: Reading Comprehension Success in 20 Minutes a Day. The publisher is LearningExpress, and it's available in most of the big-box bookstores.

You mean taken, not given, right? Sorry, I was a little confused.

If I were you, I would take as many classes in English as I possibly could take before taking the CBEST again. Improving your reading/comprehension skills will take a while, especially if English is not your first language. Good luck.

Peachy, this is by no means the first time in this forum that give a test has been used in a context in which the intended sense is clearly 'be examined' rather than 'administer an exam'. The first couple of times it appeared, I assumed the poster was not a native speaker of English, but it's kept showing up, and in posts by people who come across like native speakers of English elsewhere on the forum.

shallynanda, people who struggle with the essay writing tasks often fare best with feedback on their writing. That's why I suggested a tutor.

Approximately where in California are you? And what do you see in the diagnostic indicators on the left side of the official printed score report?

I agree with previous poster suggestion of tutor

    Hi,

I agree with the previous poster, who mentioned the tutor. I think that one-on-one would be the most helpful.

If you are taking a college writing class, does the college have a writing center or English tutors? Check with your instructor. Check with classmates.

    I hope this helps.

    Tenly

Hmmm, interesting that given has been used more than once by native English speakers.

It depends on how the prompt is phrased. If you are asked to discuss both sides, discuss both sides. If you are asked to take one side, take one side. It matters less which side you take than how you defend it.

In the personal narrative, have the thesis statement in mind because it helps organize your discussion - but you can wait to state it till the end, if you like.

I need some advice about approaching the CBEST writing. I am not a good writer, and have trouble putting my thoughts in a coherent manner. The most difficult part for me is starting out because I do not know where to begin.

On the upside, I only need to take the writing portion to pass the CBEST. The previous time, I did not have enough time to revise my essay so I just practically wrote a rough draft, although I failed.

Here is my performance for the writing section (scaled score 29):
Topic 1: Need for improvement in Structure and Conventions. Topic 2: Rhetorical Force, Usage, and Structure and Conventions. Furthermore, I find it kind of difficult to talk about myself on the personal essay.

    Thank you.

Good luck to all taking the CBEST tomorrow!!!!!!

Just have this monologue running through your head:

"I will do just fine, I can pass this test, as it is a piece of cake."

    Which it is!

    Good luck again everybody!

Took the CBEST this past Saturday, and found the math section not as tough as I anticipated.

I had been taking several practices tests in those CBEST practice books during the weeks prior to the test date, and found MANY of those math problems hard to approach (I absolutely hated the questions such as, "Ken is twice as old as Nick 5 years ago. If Nick is blah blah now, how old is Ted?", where you had to create an algebraic expression...YUCK).

But when I took the test, I found none of those sorts of questions, not many word problems either....I heard that the math section was edited a few years ago or something. Maybe the practice books are not updated?? (The simplicity of solving some of the problems made me a little suspicious whether I was solving them correctly...math isn't my strongest point either.)

    Scores posted:

    42 Reading
    51 Math
    47 Writing

I PASSED!! :) I'm very surprised that my best score was in math, since I had to study extra hard for that...

*Kind of* wish that my reading score was better, since I was working as an English tutor during college, but oh well...

Next hurdle is that CSET art test!

Artist823, all your scores are full passing scores: no one that I know of will care about the details. Congratulations!

1sttrx, well done! Look at this as an experience that shows you that you really can do stuff like this. (Attitude is crucial to test-taking success.)

Go find yourselves some chocolate, please, or a nice Irish coffee, or whatever else works.
