I'm wondering about using the word "I" in the expository essay. I have always been taught to never use the word "I" in almost any essay. It feels odd to me to write along the lines of "I think block scheduling should be instituted in all high schools because... " instead of something like "Block scheduling is the best choice for high schools because..." Can anyone give me some feedback here? It seems the scorers are expecting the word "I" to be used, so I should just do it. Thanks.

You infer this from the sample essays, yes? I think it's less that the scorers find "I think" optimal than that they're signaling that using "I" isn't itself a deal-breaker.

Yes, all of the examples seem to use I.

Bear in mind that the score 1 and score 2 examples are, shall we say, less than exemplary, and (as you've noted) they also feature first person. That being the case, the strongest statement that logic allows us is that the hypothesis that scorers prefer "I" is neither confirmed nor disconfirmed.

Would you say you're a fairly decent writer generally?

Thanks for your reply. Took the test today - passed the reading and math. Wrote the first essay without "I" - couldn't stand to do it otherwise! ;)
