Ambenico, all you need is a 39 on writing and you will have passed everything.

FWIW there is no such thing as "barely passed." All passing scores are equal in the eyes of the CTC and most folks who look at them.

Congratulations to all who passed one or more parts! Don't forget to celebrate. And for those who didn't do as well as hoped, relax. Take a break. Reward yourself for the effort you made. Then resolve to do better the next time.

Thanks TG for some examples and details with regards to the constitution. I am parallelly reading a book on US History and trying to make sense of the amendments.

TG, of course, you're right! And we're not just sitting back and waiting for the results. I work everyday plus I'm studying for the CSET Multiple Subjects Test (to go into Special Education program). By the way, thanks a lot for the tips about the Amendments! I wish I had your brain!

    My scores are:
    Reading: 48.
    Math: 57.

ambenico, Malcolm beat me to it. Nobody cares how you pass as long as you pass.

In very rough terms, each essay is worth 8 raw points (4 points per reading times two readings), for a total of 16 raw points. 3 points per essay per reader would give you 12 raw points, or 75% of available points - well above passing. If each of your essays gets 2 points from each reader, that gives you 8 raw points, or 50% of available points.

If your essays were clearly structured and well reasoned and you didn't make major mistakes in mechanics (spelling, punctuation, capitalization), you should do fine.

You're on track to pass, then: you need just 37 points on the essays.

As to my brain, can we keep it where it is? I'm kind of attached to it... But you're welcome to pick it.

does anyone here know if it's possible to pass the cbest writing with a FOUR paragraph personal experience essay instead of a FIVE paragraph personal experience essay???

I wrote five paragraphs for the persuasive essay, but I ran out of time for the personal experience essay. As a result, I only had time for four paragraphs. If anyone know, please post. Thanks.

As long as you have an intro, body, and conclusion, (as well the stuff TG mentioned earlier--clear structure, reasoning, and grammar/spelling), you should be fine. I wrote one 4-paragraph essay and one 3-paragraph essay and wound up with a 75, I think it was, on the writing section. And like you, I was totally paranoid that I wasn't going to pass because of my lack of paragraphs.

Ambenico, minimum passing scaled score for each section is 41. However, you can pass a section with a score as low as 37 as long as your total for all sections is 123. Because you got 43 and 41 on the first two sections, all you need is a 39 on the writing section, for a total of 123.

My understanding of a 41 is based on public records of a court case about CBEST. In those documents, it says that 41 was essentially arbitrarily chosen as the passing scaled score, and a 41 in writing is equivalent to 3s across the board. And this would make sense from the way the scoring rubric reads.

It's important to have paragraphs - paragraphs that have structure and that flow from one to the next and that contribute to the overall point your essay is supposed to make. It's much less important to have four paragraphs rather than five.

Congrats to all those who passed, and good luck to those who need another shot.

    My scores were these:
    Reading Section Scaled Score: 46
    Math Section Scaled Score: 57
I would hope they would be about average.

I have a quick question. If someone scored a 39 in Math, a 43 in Reading and a 39 in writing, do they have to repeat BOTH writing and math sections? Can they repeat only one section, either writing OR math to try and get a 41?

My cousin scored 39 (math), 43 (English) and 39 (writing), but she does not want to retake math and English. Can she retake Writing only? What's your advice?

Not sure I would have recommended retaking the Reading section in any case, with a full pass of 43, except perhaps to a test taker who's profoundly nervous about both Reading and Math.

Since it doesn't cost any extra, your cousin probably should attempt both Math and Writing next time; if your cousin would prefer to focus more energy on Writing, that's fine, but it may well be that having just TWO subtests to tackle in four hours, and having seen the test before, will help the brain function a little better on the math tasks next time. Bear in mind that one's highest score is one's score of record: if, for example, your cousin attempted Math next time but quit halfway through, the score of record for Math would still be 39.

Is this true, TeacherGroupie? If this is the case, she might as well take both Math and Writing, then. Her fear is that if she takes Math again, she might score lower than 39. (She's not good with Math) But you are saying that if she scores lower than 39 her score of record will still be 39? She doesn't know this, and I didn't know this either!

Sorry TG, I made a question error in my original post, which I think may have confused you. I have edited the post. Can you please re-read it and let me know what you think?

Thanks so much for your help. You're great!

Your correction doesn't actually change the question as I understood it, ambenico; no worries.

To confirm: at this point, it doesn't matter where in CBEST your cousin picks up those two additional points. Retaking just Writing and scoring 41 there would do it, as would retaking just Math and scoring 41 there. (39 + 41 + 43 = 123, last time I checked.) And retaking just Reading and getting a 45 would work too, if one wanted to do it that way. (In case anyone else reading this post wonders, there's a point at which it's simply a waste of time to retake a section that one has already passed. That point is 48.)

Yes, it's absolutely true that the highest score attained is the score of record. This is true of all the teacher tests I know of that have been given in California, including the MSAT that was a Praxis product, and there seems no reason to believe that it isn't true of the rest of Praxis's exams too.

    Better?

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

    Math Section Scaled Score: 58

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

I barely passed!!! I hope these scores will be enough to get me in in my Teaching Program at Dominguez Hills. Well, I still have to wait for the writing part!!! Hoping to pass this section. I am a little bit worried!

42 is a full pass in reading. As to that 58 in math, I know people who would think they'd died and gone to heaven if they'd gotten a score like that. lucianamelo, I really doubt you have ANYthing to worry about, score-wise.

    Yes'm.

    Reading...

Have you taken CBEST Reading before, or are you a neophyte?

Is it that you're generally a good test taker but that this particular CBEST thing is giving you grief, or is it that you generally have difficulty with multiple choice reading tests?
