Will let you add on additional certifications just by passing their state mandated test? (i.e. The Praxis)

In Ohio you have to go back to college and take the classes required AND pass the Praxis in order to add on additional certifications.

Can anyone tell me what states you know of where you can be certified in one subject and just pass a test to gain additional certification.

Please don't misunderstand when I say "just pass a test."

I know the tests are difficult. The difference between spending a few hundred dollars on the test compared to thousands at a college/university is mind-boggling to me.

    Thanks!!

I believe in Texas you can take a test and be certified in that area and not have to go back to college.

If you have a Single Subject Credential in California, you can add on additional subject area authorizations by passing those CSET examinations. To add a Multiple Subject (elementary) authorization, you would have to go back and take one class in addition to passing the appropriate exams.

In Florida, you can add on most certifications by just passing the test. However, I did find when I interviewed that many admins asked how I got my certifications.

    Thanks MATgrad.

I actually taught in Clearwater for a year. I didn't have a LA certification for the state and then passed their test to receive it. That was 3 years ago.

Talking with friends down there, I know that has changed quite a bit. Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas used to hire WITHOUT a degree in Eduction. This is not happening much anymore unless it is for certain subject ares.

I'm sure you know all this though. Sorry.

You can add on certain subjects in PA but I heard that would stop at the end of this year.

I think that is what NC allows as well - pass the Praxis in the subject area and you are certified to teach that subject.

I think SC requires some course work if you are applying outside of your major. If it is the same major and your state is reciprical, then you just need to have the Praxis.

I came to NJ after being certified and teaching in VA. I had to take an additional Praxis (general knowledge) which wasn't required in VA, and then was certified here.

Delaware. As long as you have a valid teaching certificate in one content area (i.e., Elementary Ed, English, etc.), you can take a Praxis test in another content area and become certified in that additional area(s) if you pass.

In Louisiana it was take and pass a praxis and you could get certified in whatever you wanted. As a result, there were some teachers who were certified in numerous subjects.
