Right after receiving my preliminary credential, I came down here to Mexico. I can't renew my credential. I have to go through BTSA. Does anyone know if I can do that online? I also have a master's degree, and wonder if that will help me with any of the clearing.
Check out UC San Diego - they have online program. Was not too difficult, though a bit pricey. They look at your transcripts and give credit where they can, so you should get some credit for masters...
If BTSA isn't offered in your area, you should be able to take online classes to clear your credential. I know teachers at private and charter schools who have done that since their schools don't offer BTSA. Although if you're not teaching in CA, they might not let you renew your credential anyway. You'd have to ask a county department of ed to be sure.
Why can't you renew the prelim? Have you already done so? I thought you could do it once. Not to hijack your post, but I'm beginning to wonder if clearing the credential is even worth it if there are no jobs. Since it was just announced that California's deficit is twice what they thought it was, I think jobs will be even harder to come by.
I looked into some of those programs before I got a job, since I wasn't sure if I'd be in a school with BTSA. I think you have to be teaching in a CA school to do many of those programs... I wonder if they'd make an exception for international teachers? There ARE jobs. I was in a cohort of 26 people in my credential program. So far, 3 of us have gotten jobs. 2 of us will be teaching in charter schools, and the other girl is moving about 8 hours away. I'm moving about 1.5 hours away. All three of these jobs are in elementary - 2nd, 1st, and 5th grades. So yes, jobs are extremely hard to come by, and the ability to be flexible is a huge asset, but they are not completely impossible to attain. Don't give up.
