Here are some "quick & dirty" definitions that my middle school kids seem to understand better than "official" definitions.

Theme--the universal idea in a story. Themes are not specific to one story, but may apply to many stories.

    Issue--a problem/conflict

The easy way to think about theme is - it's the life leson that the reader gets from the story/novel

Example - absence makes the heart grow fonder
-it's all I can think of at 11pm

    Thanks Ms Hutchinson.

I have my english exam tomorrow. I got 60% in my last one, and I think I can do it again.

Theme is presented indirectly, covertly...rather than the author announcing it. Yeah, I would define an issue as a complication.
