I'm teaching summer school, and I will have a LARGE portion of students who are entering 6th grade. This is a little out of my comfort zone (I teach 8th grade), so I'm looking for recommendations for short stories to read and work with that are in the 5th/6th grade level.

If you know some great stories for lower levels, please share! :)

My students love reading different myths. This would give you an entire genre to explore.
Another great teaser is to find some engaging books and read a chapter or two together. This would draw some students into wanting to read the book later.
Newspaper and magazine articles make great reads (especially if they have anything to do with video games, sports, middle school).

Time for Kids is a huge hit with my 5th graders.
