Hi. I will be receiving a Preliminary Credential from SJSU and am planning to move to NY. Will I be able to transfer my California Preliminary Credential over to New York for their Initial Credential?

You might check the New York web site for the credential like the one the state of California has on the government website.

I did that a few years ago. There should be reciprocity for the initial certification, but you will have to get your Master's within 5 years once you're in NY. Also, I had to take some exams - sorry, don't remember the names.

google New York State Office of Teaching Initiatives....that should give you more information and the test schedules....there will be 3 tests and they are offered every other month.

When are you coming and to what part of NY?

Wow. I'm in NJ- 3 miles from NY border and my certificate is not 'automatic' so I'd doubt yours would be coming from Cali. About 10 years ago, I was told I'd have to take an additional course (I think child abuse prevention, something like that$$$). I have a job in NJ that I never plan on leaving so I won't pursue that. Call the DOE of NY to find out what hoops you will need to jump through.

The child abuse prevention couse is just a 3 hour course and its like $30-

Taking all the state certifications is where they get you...you need 3 tests for 1 certification and then 1 test for each additional certification and they are $88 a piece!

No worries. I am a highly valued, highly paid, tenured member of a high performing district in NJ. No need for me to get my NY cert, but thanks for the info.
