“California's state university system, the largest in the United States, canceled classes on Tuesday for the fall semester because of the coronavirus, while Los Angeles County said its stay-at-home order was likely to be extended by three months.”

“In one of the first indications the pandemic will continue to have a significant impact into autumn, the chancellor of California State University said classes at its 23 campuses would be canceled for the semester that begins in September, with instruction moved online.”

Yeah. The headline on the article is a bit alarmist and the last four words are drowned out.

I read that. I expect others will follow suit in some capacity.

Do you think K-12 public schools will follow suit? This looks pretty bad.

I think the answer to that will be made by the end of June. I say June because if the medical experts are not confident enough, even with staggered schedules, to tell districts to fully open up, then I think all instruction will be online at least until January if not longer. But even so, schools could close right back up in the fall once the flu hits. That plus covid will overwhelm the hospital system. I think everyone will get a flu shot this year. Might even be mandatory for students and staff.

I don't think they should make flu shots mandatory. Actually I don't think they can.
I have never gotten the flu shot and last time I had the flu was when I was 12. That was 34 years ago.
My mom has never had the flu shot either and last time she had it was before she got pregnant with me. That was 46 years ago. So, no, no flu shot for me.

Will you get a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine if or when it's available?

Actually, any state can enact mandatory vaccination laws and enforce them. The US Supreme Court ruled on that years ago.

    The decision is final.

I will, as I have received vaccinations for many other diseases and viruses.

Me neither. I've never had the flu. I will go without the shot unless my doctor tells me otherwise. So far, she has said I don't need it at this stage in my life unless I want it.

I wish the decision was final. But the Supreme Court can always change it's mind. Sometimes that's a very good thing. Other times, not so much.

It’s final until they strike it down.

Can you imagine what kind of "bulletproof" plan these states will have to come up with to safely re-open these schools in the fall?

I'll be getting the vaccine as soon as possible. I get a flu shot every year, and I haven't had the flu either. It's not just about protecting myself but also those around me who are more fragile.

I am generally in favor of getting vaccines. However, they are saying they will have a vaccine for the virus by the end of the year which makes me a little suspicious. I'm not sure enough testing will have been completed to assure me that the vaccine works and is safe, especially since it normally takes many years to come up with good vaccines.

Lots of people are saying all kinds of things. We do have to be careful which "they" we listen to.

Well, I personally do not want to be 1st in line for the new flu vaccine. I have had 2 bad flus ever. 1x it was shortly after I had gotten the flu shot for the 1st time ever. I think I was really sick for 4- 6 weeks. ( years ago...)
The dr. explained to me that there are lots of strains of flu and that vaccine was for another type than what I had gotten. GRRR!
I'd rather be careful awhile longer and see if the vaccine is effective or has side effects.

Same here. I want a vaccine, but don't want to be one of the first ones to get it.
