I teach kinder. We have a little debate at school about whether to have the traditional calendar area or just do it on the promethean board. This last year I went to doing it on the promethean (I have a great calendar on there and it real interactive).

I do have a regular small calendar that we use too (so kids can see it anytime of the day). I really wanted them to be able to use regular calendars they are more likely to see in real life. But I don't have the big calendar setup anymore.

The argument is that kids need to see all the calendar components throughout the day so you should have the big set-up. I think doing it on the promethean is good and I include the smaller one they can refer to throughout the day. What do you think?

I'm 4th grade, but I used a combo of both. I have a regular calendar on the board, with the typical weather, days of week info, a sheet for tally marks, place value pocket chart for PV straws, and a sentence strip to write the date. Then on my Smartboard I have a calendar file:
    1st page:
    Today is ____________________________.
We have been in school ________ days.
    Word form ___________________________.
    Expanded form ________________________.
    Funny numbers ________________________.
    2nd page:
Using coins/bills to represent day of school. (Add a penny each day, trade with nickels/dimes/quarters as appropriate)
    3rd page:
Use base ten blocks to represent daily number.
    4th page:
Use blank clock to represent the daily number.

Having kids to know about the smaller calendar is more realistic!

My set-up is almost identical to yours, skittleroo, and my Principal loved it! (so did the kiddos, by the way - 100% engaged!)

I also did my calendar on the smartboard. I did have a small calendar area set up with the calendar and days of school number counter. They seemed to be doing just fine without having the big set up! I will be doing that again this year!!!
