I was poking around Vista Print this afternoon, and it made me want to get business cards for when I sub next year.

    What information should I include?

So far, I have my name, phone number, e-mail, and sub number. Should I include something about how I'm working towards certification, or that I'm a pre-service teacher?

Is there anything that I'm forgetting?

On mine I put that I do all levels. So you should probably state that or if you only want elementary, or whatever.

I put my degree, and how long I've been subbing too. I also state what the best time to call is: after 4:00 p.m.

I agree that you should put the grade levels and subject areas that you want to teach. If you have special skills in a particular subject (like computing, foreign language, MATH, etc.), put that. If given the choice, I'll always choose someone who knows a foreign language over someone who doesn't.

    Another thing:

Do you have a website? One that has your photo, bio, sample plans, whatever you've done in school that you want to show off? If so, put a link to that as well.

I'm working on my digital portfolio. There's not much on it yet, but putting the address on my card would probably motivate me to put more on it.

I have a 2nd job and I am in school so I never put when its a good time to call cuz that varies. I can always return a call. Personally If I were looking for a sub I would disregard anyone who had me call at certain times.I would also expect if I called after 4pm no matter what that sub would answer and thats not always the case. Subs have to be ready for a call at any moment. I sometimes always get calls on the weekend (sat or sunday or even friday nights) for a job on monday. This one aide that I sub for often has my cell # in her phone so she can call anytime and I have her cell # in mine so that I know its her and will answer or return the call. Going back to the sub cards: I always put name , phone #, and that I what I am willing to sub for Ex: k-5th and special needs for me, and my avaliability ex: monday, wed,fri , I put that i will sub half and full days. Anything else you know a teacher needs to have you should put it down.

Yes, put that you are working toward your credential. An administrator, at a school where I work often, told me to add that when she heard I started a credential program.

I make my own cards through Microsoft Publisher. I get the business card paper from Staples or OfficeMax. I definitely include:

    - Name
    - Substitute #
    - Home #
    - Home Email
    - A one line statement summarizing my experience (for ex.: Over seven years specializing in special education)
    - A picture or clip art of something educational (apple, stack of books, etc.)

Make it colorful & eye-catching, but not too clownish-looking.

The reason I put call after 4:00 p.m. is because I sub everyday, so there is not much point in trying to get me until I get home. We can't take calls in the classroom, and if they leave a message, chances are we'll just keep playing phone tag all day. So it just makes more sense to me to have them call after I get home. Works for me!

Of course, depending on what you're doing you can get calls between classes. I do that when I have special area classes in elementary schools.

Really though, I don't see why leaving a message is a big deal. They call and leave a message asking you to sub. You call and leave a message saying if you can do it or not. That's the important part of the conversation, everything else is just there to make it easier for you.

This is what I was going to say. Why does the teacher actually have to talk to you. Example: The other day a teacher called leaving me a voice mail message asking me to sub a day in may. I returned the call and got her voicemail and I told her I could sub for her that day. She will get it and if there is a prob call to let me know. There is no need to talk to me at all.

Ok, I'm going to try to explain this one more time. When a teacher wants me to sub for him/her, it's much easier and less time consuming to connect once when we are both available. She finds out if I'm available and in the same phone call, we set it up on AESOP. We both log in, she posts it, I grab the job, DONE!!!

Yes, it might be easier as in less time overall. But does it really hurt to have a few messages left? Especially if your system is like mine and when you're requested you're just put into the job.

Well you did not say you have to go through a website. Now that would stink she wants you and posts the job for you to grab but others try to get it and you wanna grab it but others grab it 1st. So lets say you are out at xyz activity and you get a call to sub you can't technically accept it unless you have internet on your phone would deff. stink!!

In our system, the teacher can actually say that you already accepted it from their end. Normally, they contact you first to see if you're available, and put the job in the system after you confirm. The sub doesn't have to do anything except show up on the day they're scheduled.

Mine too. We can also call them and say that we were requested for a job and they'll kick the person who grabbed it off and give them the first thing that comes up.

No, I can call AESOP automated system on the phone and hope no one has beat me to it and accept it over the phone, but chances are someone sitting at their computer has beat me to it. Now I hope you can see why I advise teachers to call after 4:00 when I'm home and they're home and we do it together. I don't think I've ever had someone else grab the job ahead of me when we do it that way.
