I can't help it; I feel bad for him. I know it's wrong that he embellished at least one story, but he didn't do it to make anyone else look bad or guilty (like fabricate a source or evidence of something). He apparently did it to make himself look exciting - which is no less embarrassing for him but is less egregious IMO. Some of the things they're digging up about him - like conflicting accounts of whether he really saved one puppy or two puppies as a volunteer firefighter - are just a bit much for me. Hey, one time I told a guy I was dating that I cooked a vegetable lasagna I made from scratch when really I bought it premade. I hope the internet doesn't find out!

We watch him at 6:30 every night. I hope he doesn't lose his job. Honestly, I'd miss him. :)

What do you think of the whole mess?

He's lost credibility....as a news anchor credibility is the bedrock upon which your career is built. I don't feel sorry for him.

Many researchers have written well-respected books on the concept of false memory. I sincerely hope this is at the root of this event.
I wish him well, and hope he returns.

It's not one event. His 'elaborations' include seeing dead bodies floating down the street in the French Quarter post Katrina. Didn't happen.

Is he mentally ill?? It seems like he has a sick need for attention. I don't watch the news (I don't have cable) so I'm hearing all of this second hand but it just seems so odd.

And in the same article there's this:

Reporters have noted another possible inconsistency in Williams' reporting in New Orleans -- references he has made to a suicide inside the Superdome.
In the 2005 documentary "In His Own Words: Brian Williams on Hurricane Katrina," Williams indicated that he wasn't a witness to the suicide.
"We'd heard the story of a man killing himself, falling from the upper deck," he said.
But in an interview last year at Columbia Journalism School, Williams told his NBC predecessor, Tom Brokaw: "We watched, all of us watched, as one man committed suicide."

Could be false memory, embellishments, or perhaps an early onset degenerative disorder.

That could just as easily be a way of promoting solidarity... "We all saw the planes hit the Two Towers," even if they weren't literally there, or "We were all with Jackie Kennedy" even if they weren't literally at the funeral, etc.

I feel bad for him. I can only imagine being in some of the situations he's been in and remembering everything that happened during that time.

With the amount of new stories that are known to be false reported by some news networks every day, I can't imagine why this is even an issue...

Or how many go back on what they say & just say we made an error....

Agree with this too. So much going on around him & his own safety & emotional toll... I would not want his job...

Yeah, true. I really hope if he goes down for this, all other news reporters receive equal scrutiny. He shouldn't be singled out. I know of a few news reporters that people should start the scrutinizing first...

It is easier to claim you received inaccurate information when reporting a story about others or other events that happened. However, it is more difficult to claim that it was an honest mistake when you claim something happened to you and explain it in detail. It makes your credibility questionable and makes people even more upset when the false events elevate your position which in the case of Brian Williams made him look more heroic.

I feel bad for the guy, but I also happen to like him. If a different news anchor that I didn't like did the same thing, I probably wouldn't be so compassionate.
