I am definitely not satisfied in my current teaching position, many reasons..... another position has opened up close to home (my current commute is 45 minutes) with much stronger teacher support, better pay, etc.....my question is: how bad will I mess up my teaching career in California if I break my contract mid-year? It's a tough decision, but I feel like this is a rare opportunity......

    When would you leave? February?

In my CA district, they'd definitely let you leave. We'd much rather hire an enthusiastic long-term sub to finish the school year than have a teacher who is miserable in his/her current position.

The district you are leaving can complain to the CTC to have your teaching credential revoked. This rarely happens though because the people in CTC know that teachers sometimes need to break their contract for various reasons.
