I am hoping we can make a list of books to read for teachers! Here is what I have so far:

The First Days of School: How to Be an Effective Teacher by Harry K. Wong

Teaching with Passion by Peter Loel Boonshaft

Teaching With Love and Logic by Jim Fay and David Funk

Secrets of Discipline: 12 Keys for Raising Responsible Children by Ronald G. Morrish

Teaching Band and Orchestra by Lynn Cooper (some great points in here that apply to all teachers)

The Boy Who Was Raised as A Dog by Bruce Perry and Maia Szalavitz (this will help you understand childrens' problems better)

Several of our staff read Teach Like a Champ, and I would second that recommendation. I thought it was a good book, and am seriously tempted to buy it myself so I have my own personal copy to mark up and notate.

I made a lot of notes from Teach Like a Champion as well-some things we learned about long ago so it's good reminder to put them into practice-very systematic tips for teaching.

I like Rafe Esquith-and I think he's a particularly good read for those middle/upper grade teachers. Teach Like My Hair is on Fire was my favorite of his.

I love Phillip Done's 32 Third Graders and one class bunny. It is a fun, quick read, but it makes me smile each and every time I read it. I love to pick it up when I have had an especially lousy day.

I think Teach Like A Champion might be the best teacher book I've ever read. Maybe because my entire teacher residency is based off the book and I've just spent so much time looking at it...but I just love it. It has very real scenarios and straightforward tips for classroom management.

How about Assertive Discipline: Positive Behavior Management for Today's Classroom by Lee Canter? Would that be a good one to pick up?

I highly recommend this book! I love some of the ideas, it is filled with great research based tips for having a well run classroom management plan. Just make sure it's the 3rd or 4th edition; the first few editions are outdated.

I bought this book, and I'm sure it played a role in the amazing recommendations from my supervisors! They loved that I was caring/respectful/positive, however at the same time I had very few classroom management issues. (This almost sounds like a cheesy ad :D, but his book was quite helpful. I can't help sharing it.) I was also able to attend a workshop related to his positive classroom management.

I also highly recommend The High Performing Teacher: Avoiding Burnout and Increasing Your Motivation by Lee Canter and Marlene Canter.

Another great teaching book is: Teaching with the brain in mind by Eric Jensen.

    Read it. I recommend it.

Also "Educating Esthma" is a good one though I can't remember the author...
