I am looking to compile a list of young adult books that deal with friendships, especially UNLIKELY friendships (like Lennie and George in Of Mice and Men). Any book titles that come to mind would be appreciated.

    Eggs by Jerry Spinelli
    Rules by Cynthia Lord

(These came to mind because I just read them recently. They are Sunshine State books for this year.)

Would Crutcher's _Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes_ work for this theme?

This would be a great one for mature students -
The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers. I read it in high school originally. It's one of my favorite books ever.

Romiette and Julio by Sharon Draper--This also deals with race relations and making assumptions about people based on their appearance. Mrs Draper came to our school this year, and our kids LOVED her books. The library couldn't keep them on the shelves!
