I'm tutoring a student who will be going into second in the fall. While I was there yesterday, her mom asked for book recommendations for her son who is going into 5th...I won't be tutoring him and don't know him as a reader but he said he just read and loved the Percy Jackson books (evidently he's a good reader). I'm not sure of the level of these books- what else would you recommend to him for summer reading?

Not familiar with the Percy Jackson books, but I highly recommend Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket for that age group.

If he liked Percy Jackson, he wil like The Red Pyramid (same author, but about ancient egypt). also he might like the Shadow Children series, by Haddix.

If he is a good reader:
    Hidden Talents by Louis Sachar
The Secret Hour by Scott Westerfeld (Lexile of 740L)

Here is an iffy one, depends on the maturity of the student:
    Tangerine by Edward Bloor

And this one is rather difficult if he is an average fifth grade reader:
Pawn of Prophecy by David Eddings

And here is a good one:
My Side Of The Mountain by Jean Craighead George

The DIVE series by Gordon Korman seems to be pretty popular with my students as are the WIMPY KID books.

A book that ALL of my 5th graders loved this past year was The White Giraffe. Boys and girls alike really enjoyed it.

The second book after this is called A Dolphin Song...they are adventure books. GREAT books!!

My 7th graders really like the Alex Rider series. He's a teenage James Bond :) If he's read Percy, he should be able to handle Alex.
