What books would you recommend for someone either looking into the profession, still in college, or perhaps 1-2 years in? I'm thinking in terms of broad topics not subject specific and preferably early-elementary ed.

The list I have so far is:
The Teacher's Survival Guide: Real Classroom Dilemmas and Practical Solutions by Marc R. Major

Tools for Teaching: Discipline, Instruction, Motivation by Fred Jones

The First Days of School: How to Be an Effective Teacher by Harry Wong

What others would you have liked to have before you started teaching?

Teach Like Your Hair's On Fire
    There Are No Shortcuts

-both by Rafe Esquith. More inspirational and anecdotal than actual classroom technique.

In my opinion Tools for Teaching really has it all. You basically need 1 general book on teaching, reading 2 or more might confuse you.
Besides that you can choose others that deal with specific issues.
The second book I would highly recommend is Dr. Ruby Payne: A framework for understanding poverty. Everything you need to understand students who come from poverty, in regards to classroom management AND instruction. Awesome book. I would recommend this in addition to the irst book.

I really like the book The inner wealth initiative, but I wouldn't start with that.

I've read a lot of good books, but the ones I found the most useful were the ones that allowed me to read the whole book or use parts. My management style is a mash up of different books.

    • Tools for Teaching by Fred Jones
    • The First Days of School by Harry Wong
    • Teach Like a Champion by Doug Lemov
    • CHAMPs: A Proactive Approach to Behavior Management by Randy Sprick

I teach in a low-income area, so I also like the Ruby Payne work, just for the understanding aspect.
