    Hi all,

I want to do a novel with my 10th graders during the 2nd quarter that is written by an author from outside the U.S. Any recommendations? I'm drawing a blank.

My 10th graders are kind of quiet. They work hard, but they aren't the most expressive group and I want them to read a really good book that has the potential to light them up.

    Any recommendations would be lovely.

    :)

I do Night with my sophomores. They usually really enjoy it! I also really enjoy the whole unit.

I'm taking your query to mean that you're looking for an author who is not white? I would recommend The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. He lives in America now, but grew up in and writes about Afghanistan. Does have one scene dealing with a male-on-male rape, so know your students and community before you assign it.

If you're just looking for not-American, Lord of the Flies is always great for sophomores.

Around here, 'Things Fall Apart' is a popular 10th grade text. If your school will approve it, 'Like Water for Chocolate' could be an interesting anchor text.
