I picked up a book called Not Much, Just Chillin': The Hidden Lives of Middle Schoolers. While it was interesting, it was primarily a narrative of the daily lives of middle schoolers, most of which I already experience for eight hours a day. What I'm really looking for is a book which describes the developmental changes and social imperatives middle schoolers are experiencing, so that I can better understand how to engage them and be empathetic to their experience. Has anyone read a book like that they'd recommend?

Have you ever heard of Responsive Classroom? They have middle school things, too. It's called Origins. They have a lot about middle school development, including books: http://www.originsonline.org/bookstore
