I'm starting a book club and am looking for our first book. What books would you recommend?

It might be fun to do a theme like animals, mysteries, inspirational, historical, etc.

What grade? I'd love some titles for a second grade bookclub. A colleague and I are having a book club for our classes- there would be some at-home components, in-school book talks and activities. m

Is this for students or for adults? If adults...a professional reading book club (T.A.R. Teachers as Readers)? or a social one?

Yes, more info please! If it's an grownup book club for pleasure reading, I can tell you that my book club had super discussions about "The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls.

    LOL
It's for me and a few of my friends. None of us have been in a book club before and everyone is just happy that I'm in charge. My only thought at this point was to pick a book that we can currently buy at Costco to keep the cost down.

I just joined a book club in my neighborhood and we're reading The Time Traveler's Wife. It's rather long but a pretty easy read. We don't meet until the end of the month though so I can't say at all how the discussion will go. The book they read before I joined was Three Cups of Tea and I believe that went well.

My social book club has done:
    Keeping Faith (Jodi Picoult)
    some sappy Nicholas Sparks book
another sappy book called "The Holiday Sweater"
    The Glass Castle
    Water for Elephants
    Eat, Pray, Love
    The Shack
The Middle Place (which is in the bargain area of Borders near me right now for $4).

Our favorites were The Middle Place and The Glass Castle.

Here are a few of my favorites:

    Good Grief by Lolly Winston
Home Safe by Elizabeth Berg (and most of her other books)
Women of the Silk by Gail Tsukiyama
Julie & Julia by Julie Powell
The Butterfly House by Marcia Preston
We Are All Fine Here by Mary Guterson
    For Love by Sue Miller
I Dreamed of Africa by Kuki Gallman (nonfiction)
    Disobedience by Jane Hamilton

If you haven't tried the Alexander McCall Smith books in the series, Number One Ladies Detective Agency, give them a try.

I decided that we would do The Time Traveler's Wife.

We are going to get together at the end of the month and maybe going to see the movie.

Thanks for all your ideas. I will keep them for next month.

    We are all very excited.
