    Hello!

I have a demo lesson scheduled in a K class next week. I want to do a social studies lesson about needs and wants. I student taught in K and I want to do a similar lesson than the one I did with those students because it was really successful and one of my favorite lessons to teach! However, I really want to include a book in my demo lesson...during student teaching I had the children watch a video instead. Can any kindergarten teachers suggest books at the K level about needs and wants that would be easy to find in a public library or bookstore? I've been looking but I can't really find anything. Thank you so much!

This is a book our second grade teachers used to teach the concept of needs v. wants: http://www.amazon.com/dp/0761339140. The students in my sped class understood it through the use of this book, too. It says it's for K-2, so it might work for you. Apparently, according to the lesson plans, there is a BrainPop video that could accompany it.

Here is another one I found linked to the first one on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Needs-Wants-Pebble-Books-Olson/dp/1429617071/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_y. It says it is for ages 4+.

Alexander who used to be rich last Sunday and there is an Arthur book by Marc Brown. I used to go into schools when I did financial literacy for a credit union and teach about needs and wants. Good luck!!

Our teachers used Alexander during the same unit I mentioned previously. I'm sure that would work well, too, in case you prefer to go with fiction.

2 good books for Needs vs. Wants

I just spent the weekend organizing all of my books...I have 2 books I can recommend for teaching needs vs. wants. Those Shoes by Maribeth Boelts & Max's Dragon Shirt by Rosemary Wells.
