Hello. I'm about to start teaching in a high school, finishing out the year for a teacher who is leaving. I'm a little nervous, having no prior H.S. experience, and I need some encouragement. So what are some things that make you glad you teach high school, or that you enjoy about the job?
Thank you! I'm excited to (hopefully) put more focus on the subject matter and less on behavior. Any other good things?
I've found that you do actually deal with behavior more than you would expect with high school kids. I mean, it's nothing like the constant neediness of lower grades, but still, if you let them, they will go nuts just like little kids. That being said, high school kids are fun to joke around with and understand sarcasm. It's also more likely that you'll make a lasting impact on their future, since their future is so close at hand.
I love that you can have solid conversations with the students. Often they're talk to you about what's going on in their lives and you can really help make a difference there.
You can really delve into a specific subject. Ditto on the behavior. Most of them "get" what constitutes as acceptable behavior by the time they hit 10th grade
The discussions of big ideas I have with my high schoolers are what give me the motivation to keep working with my middle school classes. =)
