Jem rocks. :) Lots. She made a post about the Best. First Day. Ever.

I had to copy her, but technically I've had my best first week out of all five years so far. Here's why!

    • First off, they've been so polite.
    • They do Hands and Eyes really well from Power Teaching, also called the "Perfect Student". I say "Perfect Students" and they all straighten up.
    • I have a boy who can sing like a girl.
    • I have a girl who is tiny and says, "I may be small, but I am FIERCE! I may be small, but I am STRONG!" Etc.
    • She also says, "Now THIS is what I'm talkin' about!" when she receives her classroom/school money.
    • I asked the students to write about any topic they wanted in their composition books for Writer's Workshop, and one of my kids chose cheese.
    • We tried this competition called World's Strongest Student and my kids were like "Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.... I'm liftin'! I'm liftin'! Oww! Oww! Oww!" (All acting, of course.)
    • They turn in their homework. This is a huge accomplishment.
    • They CLAP after classmates go up to teach/present.
    • I used an Elmo for the first time today, and I was elated.
    • No arguing, complaining, rolling of the eyes, or lousy attitudes.
    • A little motivation issue for a few, but not negative behavior to match, necessarily.
    • I showed pictures of dogs dressed up to my kids one morning last week, and they all got a mighty laugh in the first minutes of the fourth day of school.
    • I talk in my silly voices and they laugh.
    • They all signed a card for a boy's grandma who passed away right before school started.
    • They understand what it means to receive a compliment.
    • I gave tests in Reading and Math- and most received in the 90s or high 80s. A few didn't do as well, but I've encouraged a lot. Can't expect perfection at first.
    • They're really happy to partake in games.
    • I believe they'll be really good in centers, once that approaches. I'm really being cautious in working towards that goal this year.
    • Best of all, I have decided to remain calm. If I am surprised a bit or expect something, my voice gets stern but doesn't yell/rise.

    Congrats,

I am pleased overall with my group this year also. I have a couple that could apply themselves a bit more but overall they are a sweet bunch and they think their teacher is "Marvelous, Awesome, Superb, and alot of other adjectives according to an activity they did with the counselor today (and then this group wonders why I brought them popcicles last Friday).

That's really wonderful, Ms.Jasztal. Don't you love when kids act like kids and not like some jaded pre-teens who are too cool to get excited about school?
