I was at the bookstore looking their Education Section. I started thumbing through some of their books on differentiation.

We've never really had any formal PD on this topic other than 'the powers that be' talking about it as if we ALL know what it is and how to do it effectively. Of course, having taught for many years, I've been able to manage. Seeing those books, however, triggered the thought that I could improve my effectiveness by reading up on it.

I need your recommendations for teacher-friendly, teacher-tested books that I can use to be more effective with differentiation. (I went to Amazon to look at book reviews, but I think teachers here would be more reliable in their suggestions.)

Looking forward to some posts on this topic. I need to read up on some teacher-tested ideas also.

I was going to suggest The Differentiated Classroom by Carol Ann Tomlinson (idohomom's second link). We used this as a book study in my school 2 years ago.

My suggestion also. She includes very practical applications for all grade levels as well as lessons from other teachers. It is very readable and the examples provided are easy to tweak to your grade level. She also provides example lessons for all subject areas.

    di

If you're really interested, the PLS online course for Differentiated Instruction is really great. I am taking it now and I have learned SO much that I am excited to use this year.

I enjoyed Differentiating Instruction in the Regular Classroom by Diane Heacox. It has a lot of practical ideas I was able to easily put to use in my classroom.
